Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

I have a Duo-Therm 57915 (13500 BTU) that frosts up the bottom 1/4 of the coil and shows signs of a freon leak on the copper tubing (oily substance). I assume I have a freon leak. It a 2006 unit. Is it worth fixing or should I just buy a new one (around $520)?

Buy a new one. Your repair will cost approx 2/3rd (or more) the price of your new unit. Your old unit has no warranty left while your new unit will have a warranty. :-)

If the bottom rung of the evap coil is the only part frosted, or frozen and no other parts of the evap coil contain frost, you are most likely low or out of freon. An experienced repair company should be called out to verify this. If the freon is actually low, recharging the unit is not a plausible option because there is a leak. A repair or replacement of the fridge is needed. Pleazer Appliance...

ADDING FREON IS A LITTLE MORE COMPLEX AND BEST LEFT TO A PRO, YOU CAN MAKE SURE THE FAN IS OILED AND THAT THE FINS ARE CLEAN, TAKE NOTE IF YOU SEE A OILY SPOT ON THE UNIT THIS MAY BE THE SIGN OF A FREON LEAK ,, IT MIGHT BE WELDED AND RECHARGED .. THATS MORE BETTER THAN BUYING A NEW UNIT CUZ THESE AINT CHEAP ! JAY THE POOL PUMP GUY IN LONGWOOD FL

Dometic refrig not cooling but found yellow oil at service panel

if you find an oily substance its most likely freon. this looks pretty new so i would say you have a bad soldered joint on a copper to steel line. theses usually ar fot the high side. where the condensor coil or loop runs either to underref or up in the ref walls

You either have a refrigerant leak or a dirty inside coil or a slow running inside blower motor.
Set the thermostat for heat and run it until all the ice is thawed. Then check the incoming air side of the coil for lint and dirt. Check the fan motor for proper speed. If you have service gauges your low side pressure should be approximately 68 psi. If lower you have a leak.

Rooftop a/c not cooling as well as it used to.

How old is this unit? In the Duo-Therm Brisk Air Models, they were notorious for a small leak in the capillary tube that runs into the evaporator part of the AC. There are two small tubes that are run together, take the top off of the evaporator coil and pull the lines apart gently. Look for noticeable signs of leaking in the area. If the lines have been looking or look like they have rubbed together for an extended period of time, you need to have someone replace the lines or buy a new air conditioner. I would price both before committing to either one. Hope this helps.

PAC L90 leaking oily substance

it leaked all the freon and oil out .
it needs to be vacuumed and oil replenished.
filled with freon.
should only cost you bout 50.give or take
as they use very little freon.
a shrader valve port has to be added to introduce the freon. takes just a few seconds.
