Chainsaws are a 2 stroke engine, when you use mixed fuel in a saw or any type of two stroke machine and let it sit, the oil in the fuel will varnish the inner workings of the engine.Sort of like eating lots of fat foods and getting clogged up aterys. Carburators are notorious for clogging up on 2 strokes. Most people mix there gas a little rich to be on the safe side so when you let this mixture sit without the engine running it through it will clog up everything. This is why when you are done for the season you should empty out the fuel tank and then start the engine , this will burn all the remaining fuel up and nothing will be there to clog it up over the winter. So with a saw thats sat for 10 years. Shes clogged! Get a carb rebuild kit, clean everything with raw fuel, no oil. All the smallest little holes will be plugged up"Jets"Use air to blow through everything. Then mix some new fuel up and it should work fine. Another thing to watch for with all of this is, inside the fuel tank, if fuel sits for too long it will harden up the fuel line. Sometimes it will actually break off inside the tank. Preventing the engine from getting fuel.If you use a little flash light you can usually see inside the tank and check this as well. Hope this helps. Have fun!

When you pulled the spark plug, was it wet? If not, then the fuel system is not putting fuel into the engine. Try spraying some fuel into the plug hole and attempt starting again. If it pops a few times, then look to the carburetor and the fuel filter in the tank. The filter is combined with the outlet port at the tank. Make sure the air cleaner and muffler are not plugged. Make sure the choke mechanism closes the choke plate fully and that the throttle plate opens fully when the throttle is pulled. Hope some of this helps!

On Macs, the engine case splits vertically. Remove the rear case to expose the oil and fuel tanks. The only fuel line is a short length from the bottom of the fuel tank out to a port in the engine case. The tank just pulls off when the fuel line is removed (it is plastic line, so it may be hard to remove--replace with the proper-sized rubber line obtainable from a saw service shop). To get to the carburetor, you have to remove the front case--many bolts and screws in many locations, plus dealing with the throttle mechanical connection is a nightmare. See if you can get fuel to run out of the tank port first before tackling the carburetor--which may not be in trouble. I have a small Mac that is nearly 20 years old, has had fuel in it at all times summer and winter and never fails to start with more 4 or 5 pulls. Good luck!

How do i replace my fuel in my fuel tank

To get the fuel out take the cap off the tank and dump the old fuel into a empty gas can. Then mix up some fresh fuel using fresh gas and pore it into your fuel tank. Somewhere on the saw or in your owners manual the proper fuel and oil mix should be listed. Put the fresh fuel in the tank. There still may be some old fuel in the fuel lines so use some starting fluid so the old fuel is pulled through when you first start it.

Have a poulan wild thing and the oil bar compartment has gas in it

I would drain the oil and gas or whatever is in it. I would also drain the 2 cycle mix from the gas tank and start with a fresh gas and oil mix and fresh bar oil. The mix for the Poulan Wildthing is a 40:1 mix.

You are definitely going to smell gas when using any chain saw.

I have a poulan P3416 chainsaw. It is missing the part that (i think called primer) that mixes the gas and oil. What is this part called?

This machine does have a primer bulb, it does not mix the fuel and oil, it pulls the fuel from the carb and dumps it back to the tank, this is to aid starting by filling the carb with fresh fuel prior to starting, it is a small assembly with bayonet fittings to hold it in, there is two connections on the back, a pressure side and a suction side, they must be connected in the correct orientation, just remember it pulls fuel from the car and back into the tank, it does not push fuel into the carb, the part number is 530047721

Chain saw won't start

Things to check, drain and re fill with fresh fuel/oil mix, replace the fuel filter in the fuel tank, remove the spark plug, rest on top of the cylinder and check for a spark, if this is all ok remove the muffler and check the condition of the piston through the exhaust port, any signs of damage and the saw will have to come apart for further investigation.

Chain saw smoked than stopped. 6 months later I turned it on an it ran. Tried again later and it will not run.

I would say the fuel in the tank is either stale or has too much, or incorrect oil mixed with it, drain the tank, rinse it out a couple of times with a fresh fuel/oil mix, now fill with fresh fuel/oil mixed at 50-1 and try again.

What is the oil to gas mixing ratio for a poulan SM 4018 Pro chain saw?

The ratio is 50:1 fuel to oil using fresh fuel and a modern synthetic saw oil available from home centers, hardware stores, and saw dealers. Be sure to mix in it's own container, and shake thoroughly each time just before filling the tank to prevent oil starvation. Hope this helps!

New saw - will not start. Have put in premium gas/oil mix. Getting spark from plug when cord pulled. Hasn't even fired once.

It's possible the brake is on. Try pushing the brake forward then pulling it back until you hear it click. Then try cranking it again.
