Connecting 1 addional subwoofer to RCA (RT2870) home theater

The RCA, RT2870, home theater in a box came with 1 subwoofer. On the back of the amp it has a single (rca) jack to connect a addional subwoofer other than the one supplied. I have a KLH SW90 powered subwoofer that I have had for awhile, that has a seperate amp. the conection on the back fo it has 2 rca jacks, high level imputs L & R. Then L&R regular speaker wire goes out to the KLH woofer speaker box with 10" speaker. How do I connect the RCA home theater amp , with a single RCA connection out to the KLH amp or power control, with 2 RCA connections high power imput(L&R) so the KLH powered subwoofer will work also? Thanks, Greg

SOURCE: My klh subwoofer has R&L

Yes, you use a subwoofer cable and hook it into the mono rca jack in the back of the sub. or you can use a Y splitter 1 female to 2 males. or if your amp has 2 sub outputs (L&R) then use both. I do believe it's said that if you use the high level input, it's better. I forgot why...

Oh yeah. the difference between the 2 is a high level input allows the currant from the amp to pass through the sub, thus allowing the continuation of wattage to your other speakers.
Low level input is only taking a audio signal from the amp. No power is being sen through the connection.

On the subwoofer's L&R input, you'll see a tiny "mono" next to the Left input. Hook up your receiver's single sub output to this jack and you're all set.

Subwoofer not working

The subwoofer is normally the main power supply for the other speakers. When setting up the system, there is a set up guide which allows you to control the power supplied to each speaker. You may have inadvertently set the subwoofer to have 0 output.

I'm having a problem with my RT2870 RCA Home Theater System. When I plug a USB turntable into the USB slot, it will not recognize it. It does however, recognize MP3 players that have a USB slot. Can you...

That's because a USB turntable is a bit higher up the compexity foodchain than a USB drive with files already on it. The RT doesn't support anything but USB devices that mimic storage devices.

Hi,

How to Connect 2 Subwoofers to One Receiver

Subwoofers produce the deep bass sounds that give home theater the realism of being at the movies. A good subwoofer can rattle the walls during action sequences, while adding depth to recorded music and a heightened sense of feeling in the midst of a televised sporting event. Because most home theater receivers are equipped with a single subwoofer jack, connecting a second subwoofer requires a simple audio adapter available at electronics stores. Self-powered subwoofers have their own built-in amplifiers to drive the bass speakers, so they cannot drain power on the main receiver in a system and thus pose no danger to the equipment, even when an extra subwoofer is connected.

Things You'll Need:

Home theater receiver
Y-adapter with RCA jacks on two ends and an RCA plug on the other, available at electronics stores.
2 RCA subwoofer cables
2 subwoofers

Instructions

Plug the Y-adapter into the home theater receiver's "Subwoofer OUT" jack.

Connect an RCA subwoofer cable to each jack on the Y adapter and route the cables to the subwoofers in the room. Because subwoofers deliver an omnidirectional sound, the boxes can be placed anywhere they won't get in the way, but within reach of an electrical outlet..

Plug an RCA cable into the "Sub IN" jack on the back of each subwoofer.

Connect the subwoofers to wall outlets and turn on each unit by pressing the power button, typically located on the back panel.

Adjust the volume and crossover settings on each subwoofer as desired. The crossover adjustment knob tells the subwppfer which low-end frequencies to reproduce from the audio signal, such as a movie on DVD. All frequencies higher than the crossover setting will be transferred to the other speakers connected to the receiver.

Tips & Warnings

Use subwoofers that are closely matched in power, as rated in watts, when using two subwoofers in a home theater setup.

Disconnect the subwoofers from the power supply while making the audio connections.

I have an rt2870 and am just wondering where i connect the yellow subwoofer cord to the TV at, and i set my tv setting for the surround sound

You shouldn't connect the subwoofer to the TV. Just connect the Right and Left audio cables (red and white RCA plugs) to the TV audio out and then the other side goes receiver's audio in. If you are using the subwoofer that came with the unit, connect it to the sub port (purple and grey or black striped). The red and black striped cable goes to the subwoofer control.

If you are using another active subwoofer, connect it to the RCA jack labeled Subwoofer Audio OUT.

If you have a 3-plug RCA cable that is a composite video cable. The yellow plug carries the video, the red and white carry the audio signal. This cable is most often used for connecting older VCRs and game systems to a TV (or newer devices to an older TV). Thus leave the yellow jack dangling if using it for an audio cable.

Set your TV to use the external audio speakers and the receiver will take care of the signal to the subwoofer. (You only would connect the speakers individually for a computer sound system.)

I hope this helps.

RCA RT2870 home theater system 'welcome' screen

Well, I just returned the unit. RCA replied with the following solution:
Let the unit sit with the AC power cord out of the wall for a couple of
hours. Then hit the power button 10-15 times (with the AC power cord still
out of the wall socket!) and then try again.
