Question about Troy Bilt Tb70ss Gas Trimmer

2 Answers

I have a troy built tb70ss trimmer. The fly wheel is not grabbing onto the shaft. So when i pull to start it doesn't turn the engine over. I took it apart and it looks like there should be a metal block to hold the flywheel in place. The trimmer was used one time. I see no block but maybe the flywheel was supposed to have a part sticking out instead. I looked up on the part list and saw no block. Does anyone know if there is a piece sticking out of the inside of the flywheel to hold onto the shaft? If there is supposed to be i just need to buy the flywheel. Thanks

I have the same trimmer, the original flywheel has the shaft key built into the flywheel. The built in key has shreared off, this can happen if you hit something or their may be a bigger internal problem. Look for replacement flywheel that uses a seperate key that is not built into the flywheel. Replacement key are far less expensive than replacing the flywheel.

Usually there is a nut on the end of the crankshaft. there shoud be a long piece that the square shaft fits into and the nut is behined that in one piece and there should be like a half moon key that keeps the flywheel from spinning on the shaft.

My troy bilt trimmer tb20sc rope is hard to pull. It all of a sudden stopped working. Took it all apart. Pull on rope off of trimmer,it still works fine. Took off spark plug, piston is moving up and down....

Jard you need to check that the bottom head is clean and there are no obstructions. Then check that the coil is in tight and the nuts are not loose. Finally have you been using the correct fuel mix? Clean the fly wheel with some lubricant spray and sand paper and re assemble.

When I pull the trigger on gas Trimmer the head does not rotate?

sounds like the wire inside the two piece shaft is not making proper contact or that drive wire snapped. loosen the plastic knob and pull them apart then push the two pieces back together again. if it still doesn't spin, listen for a rattling noise somewhere inside the shaft, it could be a break.

Weedeater Head won't Turn?

I had the same problem with a Troy Bilt tb65ss. It sat in my garage for a year until I decided to tear it apart. I pulled of the head, removed the debris shield with a Phillips screwdriver, then removed the upper head assembly from the shaft. The inner flex cable is shaped like a square and had wiggled up the shaft until it was no longer engaging. I pulled it down and reassembled the upper head assembly with it engaged. It was a simple fix and took less than 10 minutes. It looks like a terrible design and a repeat problem. If it happens to me again I'll probably jb weld the flex cable in place. Good luck! You can always call the manufacturer and haggle over warranty and haul your trimmer all over town to an authorized dealer who will put it at the back of their pile because you didn't buy it from them or you can fix it in 10 minutes!

Spring assist starting not working

I would be looking at the starter pulley they are known to separate and jam the flywheel causing the symptom that you have, the only problem is you have to buy the starter assy to repair it.

Need to clean carburetor of troy built trimmer. Where can I find directions on how to do it?

Go to any auto parts store and buy an aerosol can of carbeurator cleaner. Remove the air cleaner filter and give the air intake a couple of squirts. Pull the cord and turn the engine over a couple of times to draw the cleaner into the carb. Then let it sit for an hour and dissolve what ever is gumming up your carb.

When pulling the rope to start it doesn't grab for about 5-6 pull

Unscrew the 3 or 4 screws on the outside of the plate that is part of the pull string housing, there are 2 centrifugal pegs that are sticking due to trimmings getting in that area. Inspect, and clean the pegs that fly out when you pull the string. Do not oil (that will only attract more junk later), make sure they are free, and come out when you pull the string. And your problem will be solved.

Is the pull rope in the front or rear of engine.Thinking that the string is in the front, you must throttle housing and shaft from engine. remove starter housing. There sould be a screw holding the string and spring in place.
