Public speaking with a lectern

Many public speakers who are used to speaking without a lectern find it a challenge to speak with one. Speaking properly and naturally from behind a lectern will make you a very well rounded public speaker, so you are ready for any kind of public speaking gig. A few simple tips that you can practice will make you a much better speaker if you are used to giving over keynotes rather than lectures.

When you stand behind a lectern make sure that you plant your feet firmly. If you tend to shift from foot to foot or lean on to the podium this will give your audience the impression that you are nervous or anxious. Practice standing up straight and tall will give the impression to the audience that you have confidence and know what you are talking about.

Don't think too much about what to do with your hands. Many speakers try to choreograph their hand motions with their speech, but that will start to look staged. When you practice your speech find a comfortable place to put your hands, whether resting on the lectern or gripping the sides. Forget about moving your hands and the gestures will just come naturally making you look more comfortable with your speech.

Print your speech in a large print or on note cards with large spacing. If you are giving over a long speech with figures or numbers and a lot of information, using large print will make it easier for you to find your place should you forget what comes next in your speech. Although you shouldn't be reading from your notes, having them will give you a little more confidence than not but don't rely on them too much.

Practicing with these three tips in front of the mirror at home or with a friend in the lecture hall that you will be speaking will help to improve your public speaking skill dramatically.

When i have to speak in front of even 20 peoples i shake that i can not say what i need to say and the bad part i;m a manager at work

Public speaking can be difficult; there are several techniques to use to help you get over the stage fright you feel, meaning the fearfulness and nervousness. Many will say to imagine them in their underwear; although this may help in some situations, other times it can cause you even greater embarassment and stress( in example, if there is an attractive person there and....well, you know!)
I suggest you take some deep breaths and prepare what you want to say beforehand, in writing, on small cards ( like cue cards). Explaining that you feel nervous talking in front of groups will help, since most of them also have the same problem and they will all be sympathetic to you. The cards will help you to remember exactly what you need to say, as well as keep on track.
Start off by just reading the cards. As your comfort level increases, look up from the cards and look slightly over their heads, or glance briefly at each of them as you read. Relaxing as you go will help - as well as remembering most of them have the same problem, whether they admit it or not. When I first started playing music on the Worship team at church, I was nervous and made mistakes - but I kept on playing. Its been over a year now - I still make mistakes from time to time, but I am getting better. I really enjoy this Ministry, and public performance ( and speaking) is getting easier everytime.
I hope this helps - GOD bless and thanks for using Fixya!!

Do weight loss pills cause damage to your liver? I heard from a friend that this was a real problem which is making me nervous as I was thinking of starting the tablets.

Liver damage/ toxity is one of the side effects that are listed for weight loss pills. There is definitely an element of risk, but much more common side effects include diarrhea, dizziness and increased heart rate. If you are really worried, you should speak to your doctor about it before you start using them. But remember, all drugs have a long list of side effects written about them and it doesn't necessarily mean that you will suffer from them.

Cannot print

Its most likely your printer communication with your computer is "laggy" if your using wifi printing you should reset your wifi modem. If you print with a cable try to blow both ends and jacks on pc and printer. If this doesnt help check if your computer meets requirements for best printing for this printer also try buying new link cable. But for this type of problem it would help more to contact your printers customer/ tech support because of its brand

I have to go onstage and make a presentation

ok bunnydawg, what is your presentation about, how long is it going to be, how many in audience, when is it?
Although I'm wondering what the answers are for the above, here are some suggestions: practice, practice, practice!!! Start out by yourself w/ your presentation written down. Go from start to finish, speaking out loud, as if you were giving the presentation for real.
U can move up to practicing in front of family and friends. I must say I have gone through the same nervous, anxiety, freaking out myself when I had to give talks to groups of people. It gets easier with actually doing it, but the one thing I found is this--no matter how much u read over your material, and know it well, it's a totally different experience trying to speak out loud to a group. That's why I think u should practice speaking your presentation out loud, it's really helpful. So, answer my questions, and I'll be interested to hear how it goes! Break a leg! curt
