When AC unit trips the breaker it usually means one of four possiblities.

1) the AC unit is causing the breaker to trip, i.e. a shorted fan motor, compressor, or some other electrical component - in which case you will probably need to have a repairman look at it.

2) you've plugged the unit into a outlet that is connected to a breaker which is too small to handle the load the AC unit is putting on it.

3) a defective breaker (not likely but possible)

4) just a 'random' trip and if you reset the breaker it might work fine.

good luck!

Unit trips the beaker as soon as you turn power on

When the breaker trips immediately, you usually have a direct short in the unit. It's best to have a qualified technician check it out.

Any ideas as to why the panel breaker for my Goodman CPE24-1AB heat pump would immediately trip when the air conditioner is turned on?

Without looking up the specifications for this heat pump, I cannot be certain, but I expect the operation to provide cooling may require more power than when heating. You probably can find the specifications online for this unit. As you probably know, power is measured in watts and is calculated by voltage times current. This also is likely to be 240 volts operation. If you take the specified power on cooling and divide by voltage (240), that will indicate the current in amperage that will be required to start it. Your circuit breaker is set for current and needs to be a higher current than is required. If that is the problem, you can buy circuit breakers at Home Depot or Lowes. You have to remove the front panel of your breaker box and snap out the circuit breaker. To be safe it would be good to turn off the main breaker switch before you open the front panel and remove the circuit breaker for the heat pump. Should your calculation of current required be less than the rating of the circuit breaker, that implies a malfunction of the heat pump in the cooling mode and would require a service call to the local representative of the heat pump manufacturer.

My kenmore heat pump unit trip the 30 amp breaker when I reset make noise and trip the breaker

Sounds like the compressor has a dead short. Heres how to verify take the cover off the electrical panel on the heat pump. Locate the wires that go to the compressor disconnect them tape the ends and flip the breaker back on if it doesnt trip you know that the compressor is shorted and it needs to be replaced. let me know ok.

No power to tstat

If you have no power to the cooler control, your breaker has tripped. Check it. Turn it off hard, and back on hard. If it trips again, you have a problem up top, with a motor, pump, that is pulling enough amps to trip breaker. This is all it can be on these units, no power from main breaker to unit control.

Largest circut breaker allowed on a residential heat pump

Sounds like the breaker is doing it's job. Stopping an over amping condition. You need to find out what the breaker is feeding power to. If it is the outdoor unit or the indoor unit. Also, the wire used has to be sized to the breaker otherwise, it will burn inside the walls and start a fire! Both the indoor and outdoor units should have tags or lables stating what the required amount of power is required. Better not let them do anything else untill you get more info. Sounds very dangerous to me but, I'm not there seeing what's going on.
Hope this helps!

My goodman a/c unit wont turn on at all

Hi, not knowing if this is a central heat and air unit, or window unit, ect, I will say first to check the circuit breaker to see if it has tripped. If you have no power, this could be the problem, it just over loaded and tripped the breaker. If you do find it tripped, be sure you shut it all the way off hard, and back on hard. If this is not the problem, and if you have a wall mounted thermostat, get back to me and let me know what we are working with as far as if it is a heat-pump, gas fired central heat and Air Conditioning, or what ever you may have, This will be of much help in solving you're problem.
Sincerely,

Breaker trips on condenser unit on heat pump after several hours of operation

Hi, check amps on unit, and make sure breaker matches, check unit voltage tag, it will tell you what size breaker you need, or may be breaker is loosing resistance, replace breaker, if problem continues, a/c maybe over working because of high temp, temp. affect amperages, and that would be normal, if it trips after few hrs. also check a/c for lack of freon, sometimes, they need a tap up of refrigerant, not enough freon and they would run longer, get hotter and eventual trips. breaker doing his job. good luck

My Amana heat pump model PHD60C02F1 Keeps tripping the circuit breaker

Is this kicking the ground fault on the cord or the breaker. If it trips breaker could be bad breaker. If it trips quickly it is a short in the unit. Russ

Heat pump trips circuit breaker

I seem to have the same problem. But when I reset the breakers, they won't stay in the on position. They go back to the off position. What gives? It is 95F inside the house.
