My Dell Inspiron 1000 is connected to a NEC NP 60 projector which works fine using Powerpoint triggered with the F5 key but will not work in any other function such as making my secondary monitor the same as my primary. The FN/F3 does nothing.

  1. Are you using the SVGA connector on the laptop or the S-Video?
  2. If using the SVGA (normal computer monitor connector) then you have to "toggle" the proper Function Key. e.g FN+F5 on my laptop to change from internal LCD to external or both.

Graphics cards

I believe the Inspiron 1000 graphics card is integrated into the motherboard. To be sure, go to following link: www.support.dell.com and select "I'm looking for drivers and downloads". If you don't have the proper version of Adobe you will be prompted to install it. Once installed return to "drivers and downloads" and enter the "service tag", (serial number) of the 1000 laptop. Select “System Configuration” on the left hand side under “Browse By Category”. If it is integrated then you don’t have the option to upgrade the graphics card.

Capcitor test and replace

Hi there

That buzzing noise is a faulty part that would need replacement.

The thing is you will never be able to test which is the faulty capasitor , so rather just replace the part.
