At one time my USB port ( front & back ) were working until I bought a Kodak Camera . Kodak says that it could have caused by static electricity ( back emf ). In any case the +5vdc is present but anything connected to the USB ports are not recognized be it an mp3 or camera etc. Is there a particular integrated circuit that I could replace or purchase an add-on Plug-in PC board to rectify ?

Do you have the lastest drivers for your chipset (motherboard) installed? are you using the front or rear USB ports? If you're using the front then make sure the front panel USB ports are actually plugged into the motherboard.

Check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts Check if USB Ports Are Damaged

USB ports are an important part of your computer's hardware.
Many devices connect to the computer via USB, such as music players, cell phones and digital cameras.
This connection lets you charge your devices and manage files on them.
When you connect a device to a USB port, it is typically recognized automatically.
If not, there may be a problem with the port. USB ports sometimes fail on their own, or they may be damaged by force.

Plug a variety of devices into the USB port you think is damaged.
If none of them work, the port is probably broken.
Connect the same devices to the USB ports on a different computer.
If they work, this is another indication your ports may be damaged.
Run Windows Update on your computer to ensure your devices and computer function together and have the latest drivers.
Click "Start," then type "Update" in the search bar.
Click on "Windows Update," "Check for Updates" and "Install Updates."

Open the Windows Device Manager by clicking "Start," then typing "device manager" into the search bar.
Click the Device Manager link when it appears.
Click on each of your USB ports.
In the Properties window, look for "This device is working properly."
If this is displayed for each USB port, they are not damaged, but there may be a problem with your device instead.
Click "Update Driver" next to each USB port in the Device Manager, and Windows searches for and installs the latest driver.
If one can't be found, go to your computer manufacturer's website, and download the driver there. Try to use the USB port again.
Sometimes, outdated or damaged drivers result in a non-working USB port.

Open your computer case by unscrewing or sliding off the side cover.
Use a can of compressed air to clean out the dust from inside, especially from within the USB ports.
If your USB ports are hooked up to the motherboard, remove the cable, then replace it.
These actions sometimes help to fix non-working ports.

I cannot get my keyboard or my mouse to work with my dell computer. what can i do?

Please add more information to get specific assistance. Are these wireless devices? If wired, do they use USB or PS/2 connections.

For wireless devices, try replacing the batteries and resynching to the receiver. (You may want to check putting the receiver in different USB ports.)

For wired devices, disconnect and reconnect. For PS/2 devices, you will need to restart the computer to check if the devices work. For USB devices, try connecting to different USB ports.

Next step, try using a different keyboard and mouse (that work on another computer (stick to USB or PS/2 to match the current pair)). Try a wired set if the problem is with a wireless pair. If those work, continue diagnostics on the wireless keyboard and mouse. Check if the mouse and keyboard work on another computer. If they don't work with another computer, replace them.

If another USB keyboard and mouse pair don't work in any port, your USB ports may have failed. Check if even one port works enough to access the Device Manager. (Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager (Win7); similar directions in other versions of Windows) Check for a problem with the drivers (For USB ports, scroll down to the USB drivers and look for a triangle with a yellow exclamation point or red x). Try to update the driver or roll it back. If that doesn't help and one USB port works, a USB hub may solve the problem.

Otherwise if the USB or PS/2 ports do not work with any devices and the driver fix doesn't work, then I'd suspect a problem with the ports on the motherboard. Replace the motherboard/computer.

I hope this helps.

Problem with usb port don`t work

Step 1
Before you start working on the USB port, make sure that your device is not the problem. If the computer says that the there is a new USB device but that it cannot use it, typically there is a problem with the device's driver and not the USB port. If this is the case, your best option is to re-install or upgrade the device driver. Try inserting the device to another computer. If the device works, most likely the problem is with the computer and not your device.

Step 2
Try rebooting the machine. Rebooting a computer resets all of the software to the default state and will clean up many issues. The start up process also checks all of the devices on the computer and can sometimes fix a USB port. First shut down the machine. Connect the USB device up to the computer and start it. This reboot will sometimes fix a bad USB port.

Step 3
Try attaching the USB device on to another USB port on the same computer. If the device now works, the old USB port probably has a hardware or BIOS issue. Skip to step 5 to try to fix a bad USB port through the BIOS. Fixing a hardware problem on a USB port requires working on the motherboard which is typically more expensive just adding a new USB ports.

Step 4
Uninstall your computer's USB device bus manager. The device manager controls the USB access and sometimes gets corrupted. Fixing the USB device manager requires administrator rights on the machine. The best way to uninstall the device bus manager is to right click on your computer's icon and select properties. This will bring up the hardware settings for your machine. Click on the hardware tab and select the device manager. The device manager lists all of the devices on the computer. The next step is to open up the "Universal bus controller" option. Right click on all of the items under this option and uninstall them. Once all of the devices have been removed, restart the machine with the USB device connected. Upon reboot, windows re-installs the USB device manager. Most of the time, this will fix the USB port.

Step 5
The next thing to try is to check the BIOS. Restart the machine and enter the BIOS setup screen. You should check to make sure all of the USB ports are active. If they are, you should try resetting the BIOS settings to the defaults. The BIOS reset will sometimes fix USB port. But if it does not you will have to consider upgrading the BIOS. Upgrading a computer BIOS is very dependent on the motherboard manufacturer and you will have to visit your computer manufacturer's web site for detailed instructions.

Step 6
The last trick to try to fix a USB port is to repair your OS. Sometimes the USB drivers can get corrupted and break the USB ports. You can reinstall the system files onto the computer which should fix the USB port. Your data files should not be changed in this process, but it is a good idea to do a full backup of the computer ahead of time. In windows, an OS re-install is done by loading up the windows installation CD/DVD and selecting the repair windows installation. Just follow the steps and you often have a fixed USB port at the end of the process.

Thanks......Have a great time.

Damaged USB Port

Ok I think the best method to "Fix" this would be to get your self a 4 - 5 port USB card, they are, real cheap, insert it into a spare slot, inside your PC, and install the drivers, if any, and use that one. And simply ignore the other one all together.

The emachine model KAWE0 is with operating system windows xp sp1 doesnot recognise any usb device.

Good day sir, hi, usually its one or two ports that does not recorgnise a usb device, but if all ports does not recognise the usb device, check the CMOS setup. check this out;
  • one or two ports does not recognise the usb device, this is a local fault, try to check the CMOS setup, this could also be the port itself is the faulty one having loose connection.
  • all ports does not recognise the usb device, this is a system fault, check again the CMOS setup if the USB port is enabled, check the USB device itself also. to make sure use another pc to test the usb device.
A computer virus can also cause the usb port to malfunction, run an anti virus software, if possible you can reinstall the XP and test the USB port afterward.

If all else fails, you can buy a USB card and plug it on the expansion slot on your PC.

Anytime I plug something in to the USB port it give a error message that states, Power Surge on the USB port. What can I do to fix this?

The USB device could be drawing more current than the USB port can supply or the USB port may be faulty.
Get a powered USB hub and plug it into your computer's USB port and then plug the USB devices into the powered USB hub.

Cd burner does not recongize blank cds

You need to make a list and check everything from the power cord to the attachment for the motherboard. Then check the 'device manager' and see if it is reading the port, sometimes they can disable itself and you would not know it. If that is the case then have the driver reinstalled.
