Can I transfer video tapes onto CD's

A lot depends on what type of video tape you use and where do you want to play the DVDs (CDs are for audio recording only). If tape is compact VHS then you can buy a simple DVD Recorder VHS VCR combo player and transfer across easily provided you have the compact VHS cassette module.
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/reservoir/tv-dvd-players/lg-v271-vcr-dvd-player-combo-recorder-6-head-hi-fi-stereo/1073556241

For other type of video camera tapes you will have to try other methods like connect camera with tape to a DVD recorder and directly burn the DVDs. You can buy attachments and software for PC but I have found these very cumbersome to work with.

How many LP's can I burn onto one CD in this unit? There is no indication when the CD is full or what is happening during taping. Sometimes units taping is visible. Then there is a funny symbol,

I can't begin to answer your question directly because I am not familiar with your audio unit but I have burned a few CDs on the computer...

Think of a vinyl LP with around 16 to 18 tracks. A CD of that album in high quality stereo audio will have no more or less and it will be, for practical purposes, full.
Thats it, roughly one CD per LP. Pure audio files are big and take up lots of room. Using a computer you could squeeze more in but it would mean breaking the LPs into tracks and playing disc jockey so by mixing and matching running times all the available space would be filled.

Most people who archive their tape and record collections do so on the computer using something like Goldwave to record the audio tracks and then convert them to Mp3 files using a suitable bitrate.. With the standard bitrate there is very little loss of quality and the amount of content that can fit on a CD is immense. I received an Mp3 CD from the Radio Lady and it contained 97 programmes from old radio - some were shorts and some were an hour but the majority were half-hour so it would be fair to say that Mp3 disc contained 50 times the content of an audio CD. Because they were low quality mono a lower bitrate could be used - on the other hand the highest bitrate produces a better than CD reproduction though the resulting files are as big as pure audio files.

The downside is not every CD player will accept Mp3 discs. The one in my van does and I rarely need to select another disc. If I want to play Mp3 content at home I do so with the computer, sometimes with an FM transmitter so we can listen on the big speakers of the hi-fi or a portable radio.
On the plus side the Mp3 files can be converted back to WAV and a CD burned at any time.

I hope you find this informative.

Why does my sony reel to reel tape deck make no sound when playing a tape?

Are you playing the tape "right-side up"? I used to screw that up a lot at my radio station.

Tape is torn and I need to get it out of the cassette housing, splice the tape, then place in a new housing. Where can I get a repair kit??

Cat. No. 44-626 used to be available at Radio Shack but no more.

This might work..

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/geekslutz-forum/31114-cassette-repair-kit.html

"Splice the broken end to the take up reel of a newly bought cassette that you can open.
open the new cassette,
trash the interior
If you can't move the old reels to the new mechanism:
tape one side of the broken cassette's tape to the new take up reel
close the new cassette (do not open or break the old cassette if it's not already done)
insert a pencil into the gizmo on the take up reel on the new cassette,
reel up the old cassettes tape into the new cassette
re open the new cassette
splice the other end to the new cassette's gizmo
close the new cassette
record the contents to digital"

Can i use this unit to convert tapes and recordsto cd's

Hi,
It is only a burner you need to get a recording capture card which fits into your PC. Then you need the program so you can play your tapes and records and have this plugged into the PC. Then you can capture the sound and have it on your PC to burn to CD.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Jason

Repairing or replacing old tape decks

Hi m522posner

There is a surprising interest in "vintage" hifi products these days. Your tape machines probably needs new belts. Check this site out. You can get spares for your tape machine here. Belt kits are $17. He does repairs also, but the transport to and from may be an issue for you. I suggest emailing Bob, he may be able to refer you to someone in CA > I could do the repairs, but I am in Australia. :)

You could have a go at freshening up the belts yourself:)
