turn on ur psp
press the select button
and then select reset device
it will bring the default setting of your PSP
now chek if still UMD doesnot open
ur new firm ware is corrupt and try reinstaling the firmware from the sony website

Did yout try using the same UMD game your brother was using and see if the game format has anything to do with it? Since you upgraded, the UMD game may be old, and might not work with Version 3.71. It sounds like your PSP is working just fine other than that.
Start by cleaning the UMD drive, you can do this with an alcohol-free CD wipe wrapped around a cotton bud (Q-tip) or preferably with an air duster (available from any good hardware or electronics store).
Next clean the disk(s), you can do this by turning the centre of the disk with one finger and holding an alcohol-free CD wipe to the disk surface with another, however you can buy UMD cleaning tools from most large game stores that make the job much easier.
