Engine cutting off after engaging the pto (mower deck) JD 317

I have a John Deere 317 tractor. The engine runs well and I have had it serviced but the problem continues. After turning on the PTO the engine shuts down. The tractor will mow for varying amounts of time before shutting off but, it does restart and run well (backfires because of the sudden shut down) without shutting down when the PTO is off. Since, I had it serviced they said the clutch was good, I was wondering if it could be the safety switch in the seat. I removed the seat switch and ran the tractor making sure the seat switch (with PTO on) was making contact and after a few minutes the tractor shut down. Then ran the tractor without turning on the PTO and the tractor ran fine without stalling. Could it be the seat switch (appears original from the 80's) or something with the wiring or even the clutch?

F525. Updated mower switch by John Deere is not engaging mower

The John Deere F525, a front cutting machine, has 3 fuses.
20 Amp
15 Amp
10 Amp

Check the 15 amp fuse. I believe this supports the PTO clutch. If you replace the fuse and it blows again, check the electric clutch. You will likely find burnt or melted wires. The bearings do go out on these clutches causing them to run hot and eventually burn up.

PTO Clutch will not engage: There is a very fine one page discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:

http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:

Resistance 3.7 ohms
Current Draw 3.25 amps
It does not give the air gap.

It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

If the fuse blows, I recommend you check the resistance of the clutch. If the clutch is shorting to ground it will show zero resistance when you ohms the connector wire to a ground position. In which case, you will have to replace the clutch.

Fixing Electric Clutches

Other possibilities.
On the F525 there is a cut-off switch in the hydraulic system. It is a low pressure cut off. If you were running the mower and deck and then it suddenly stopped, it may be low pressure in the hydraulics. It will not automatically reset as you are using the same volume for the drive pumps. Once the oil gets low enough it cuts out the deck drive 1st, then the drive pumps.

What is causing my enginge to stall when I try to engage my mower deck?

Check the seat switch it might be disconnected. It will cut the mower off if you leave the seat without disengaging the deck.

Hi, check that you have 12 volts to the pto when the switch is on. It sounds like your pto is fried as the switch is functioning correctly. Regards Phil.

Mowerdeck will not engage...

I own a similiar John Deere model (L130, 23HP with a 48" deck). I would check the electric clutch (called a PTO). To do this check the wires to this clutch and look for something disconnected. These wires (to this PTO clutch) should have twelve volts with the key on and the blades engaged.

Engaging the blades / PTO

There is either a yellow toggle switch or a yellow knob type switch on the dash panel that will engage your deck unless some of the safety switches are stopping it from working due to an adjustment problem or a defective switch, let me know if you need more help.

Battery lite glows when pto is engaged after running for 5min

The charging circuits used on smaller tractors are generally barely adequate for the load presented to them, so it is important that the tractor engine is running fast enough especially when using PTO power. If your tractor has a tachometer on it, JD has an indication of the motor speed you should use when using the PTO. If not, it is generally pretty close to max. It should sound like it is running smoothly although fast, and not with whining or rough sounds from the engine.
