Have you synced your Wii remotes to the Wii yet? To sync, you have to take the battery cover off of the wii remote and the little vertical rectangle door on the front of the Wii and hold both red buttons. Your Wii remotes should work afterwards.

The B button stopped working

It's possible that the button has broken. There's two ways you can go about this.
  1. You can replace the button yourself, there's guides to doing such things (Google, "Replacing Wii buttons"), but it will take paticence and time, maybe some money.
  2. Or you can buy a new Wii controller if your not patient, or you don't have the time.
Hope this helped. Good Luck!

Bought brand new batteries for my remote, but

You need to re-assign to the Wii. When you first bought it you pressed the button on the front of the Wii to configure controllers, then the controller buttons to find the Wii. When you change batteries you need to repeat this process as the 'memory' of the controller to the Wii has been wiped
