Question about GE 29869GE2 Digital Answering Machine

2 Answers

My unit works perfectly with one exception. Over time, recording a greeting has resulted with increasing background hum. The greeting is being recorded properly about 6" from the microphone in a quiet room. The hum is therefore picked-up within the machine. I would appreciate any suggestions. The hum is only on the greetings as the incoming calls are clear. Operator error during programming is non-existent.

I already thought of using different outlets and even changing polarity with no luck.

  • rmarti100 May 02, 2010

The hum that is picked up during outgoing message recordings does not affect any other unit recordings such as incoming messages.
FYI I disconnected the unit and removed the back-up battery for 5 minutes with no luck. I also tried different outlets and even an isolation transforner.

  • rmarti100 May 02, 2010

I tried locations in the garage, bedroom, yet the hum is still the same. It appears that the cable within the machine that goes from the microphone to the pc-board must be picking something up.

  • rmarti100 May 02, 2010

    Hi,
I still expect the problem to come from within the unit. Possibly the microphone cable shield is compromised. Sure would like to get my hands on a diagram. Any suggestions?

  • rmarti100 May 02, 2010

I'm an electronics engineer. Will try to move the microphone outside the unit so the microphone cable is not criscrossing over the uper and lower cicuit boards. Maybe an electrolytic cap isw causing the interference.
Thanks for the help. Will click on the accept botton.

  • rmarti100 May 02, 2010

Still have a way to go to get find the source of the hum. Will also lock for nearby transformers in the unit.

  • rmarti100 May 02, 2010

I will try to more work on it later today.
Need to visit my parents i the next couple of hours!

Often a hum is caused by RF or EM interference. That the machine is recording calls clearly is consistent with this. The interference may be getting into the system through the power or telephone signal cable being near many other cables, or because the unit is situated next to a strong source of RF or EM field.

I recommend changing the location of your answering machine, away from such noisy sources (microwave, cordless phone, router, DC charging adapters, etc). Try the machine in an outlet that has nothing else on the circuit, if possible.

I hope that helps.

Oh this humm is from the mic inside the unit. You might want to try a different power source or outlet then any other unit like tv's fish tanks or anything that is leaving noise in the line. Now if that does not help you might have a transformer inside the unit that is not working right.

But at this point I would instruct you to try different A/c outlets in the house.

Thanks please do click the accept button for my efforts.

If your good you do not need a diagram locate the mic and look at its solder lead if its cracked you might want to do some touch up work!!

I own 3 of these. Two of them have been hooked up for over 3 years and worked perfectly until yesterday. All of a sudden, the remote wouldn't work and I couldn't turn the unit off with the power button. ...

If you are using these DVRs over the air only, with 1.2.06 installed you have to run the G* Test in the 9012 menu, to get the digital data going, after removing power. That is why your clocks are --:--. I highly recommend that you update the firmware in both of these units to 1.2.21, to avoid having to mess with the G* Test.

Noise / Hum in recordings

hi, i once had the same problem with a kenwood cassette deck. it would play pre-recorded tapes perfectly but when it came to recording from another source i would get an annoying hum when playing back the recording, the fault turned out to be a faulty earth connection on the phono connectors on the rear, they were dry jointed and once resoldered the unit worked and the recordings were perfect. maybe you have the same problem? hope this helps?

User manual of GE 29878GE1 Digital Answering Machine

From the Manual: RECORDING THE GREETING Before using your new answerer, you should record a greeting (the announcement callers hear when your answering system answers a call). If you don't record a greeting, callers hear a default greeting which says, "Record message after tone." When recording the greeting you should be about 6 inches from the unit. Eliminate as much background noise as possible. 1. Prepare your greeting. Sample Greeting: Hi, this is (use your name here). I can?t answer the phone right now, so please leave your name, number, and a brief message after the tone, and I?ll get back to you. Thanks. 2.Hold down the GREETING button. After the tone, you have 30 seconds to record your greeting. 3.Release the GREETING button when you finish. The greeting will playback automatically. NOTE: Your recording time should not be less than 2 seconds. Otherwise the unit will return to the default greeting.
