Could possibly be either. If you have access to multimeter with the capacitor check function you can test it or look at the capacitor. Sometimes they look like they have expanded when they go bad. You can also ohm the compressor windings to see if they are good. I don't know exactly what the resistance will be but it should be more than 0 and less than 100 ohms. Connect 1 lead of the meter to the common leg then check the run leg and then the start leg. Let me know what you find.

Every thing runs but the compressor wont fire i think its the compressor start up capacitor how do i test the capacitor

first discharge the capacitor for safetys sake, then touch the meter leads of a multi-meter set to RX100 to the caps leads if the needle stays on 0 the cap is shorted(but that would trip the wall breaker),if it doesnt move at all its open,if it goes to 0 and slowly climbs back towards infinity its good,i believe you will find the ptc overload relay on the compressor is defective, its in combination with the capacitor, the cap is only on there to take the power spikes off the relay contacts during start-up,the ptc overload relay is what aids in compressor start-up/run/and overload protection if compressor wont fire, change them both and it will run

Both boxes are warm. the fan runs, and the compressor kiks on for 10 sec. then kiks off i have checked the thermostat and the door seals, both r good. what else could it b?

Im sorry but it sounds like your compressor is bad. You can try replacing the start relay it is located on the top of the compressor under a plastic cap. The cap is held on by a metal clip. The start relay is about the size of a nickel and is under this cap and attached to one of the three prongs coming out of the compressor. The compressor is located in the back under the bottom of the refrigerator and is about the size of a soccer ball and is black. Make sure you unplug the refrigerator first. I hope I'm wrong and the start relay is bad but most of the time if it kicks in for more than five seconds its the compressor. good luck

Compressor cycles on for about 16 seconds and off for about 1 or 2 minutes

your compressor is bad or the start switch is bad. the start switch is on the compressor follow the wires to the compressor there will be a plastic cap held on by a flat spring wire remove the cap the starter is about as big around as a nickel and will be connected to one of the 3 compressor studs. If its the compressor you will be better off replacing the unit.

New copeland compressor wont start

Hello,By all means install a hard start kit on the cap.Your wiring is correct.A scroll compressor usally doesn't need a start kit but I have seen 5 ton units that take one.Check the compressor tag and make sure the compressor is not a 3 phase motor!

If your model has a start-capacitor on the compressor, that is the problem. When the switch energizes the compressor, the start cap provides extra current (technically phase-angle correction) to start the motor.

If the motor start cap is bad, the current-limit switch which is typically on the back of the compressor, opens up to prevent over-current condition.

So the switch tries to start, but with a bad cap, there's too much current, so it goes click-click, click-click, and the compressor never starts.

This happens all the time on old freezers, as well as on electric dryers.

The air conditioning wont turn on. The fan turns on but when it tries to cool it just goes back to the fan.

Compressor won’t Start
The Main reasons that this will happen
1 - A bad run capacitor (silver or metal capacitor)
It’s either shorted, grounded or open.
If it’s shorted a lot of times it will bulge out, (sometimes slightly)
2 - A bad start kit ( plastic capacitor and Relay connected to it )
The capacitor is either shorted or open
The relay either has an open coil between terminals #1 and #5
Or the relay is stuck.
Any time you change the capacitor or relay you should change
the other, especially if they are over a year old.
3 - A loose, burnt or disconnected wire
4 - Wired wrong
5 Compressor is open (windings burnt open)
6 Low on charge not getting enough cooling back to compressor, (Feel top of compressor to see if it’s hot it shouldn‘t be)
7 Some compressors have a black plastic overload under the compressor cap which could be bad.

When unit starts the condensor fan only comes, not compressor

You need a new fan motor and the correct capacitors for your sydtem I think they are 35 or 45 5 cap. Try a hard start kit on compressor. Are you sure you have the cap wired correctly?Russ

Wont start up

pretty basic stuff. power cord could be abaded . check to be sure power is reaching the stat with a meter. if it is then check to see if its reaching compressor with a meter, obviously the box is hot so sta t should be calling if power arrives at stat but doesn't come out stat is bad. if it gets to compressor but no run then the compressor start components or the compressor itself are bad. stat has a power in lead and a power out lead. if you check volts between terminals and show 120 the stat is open and bad. if it is set to max cold and failing to send run signalit has to be the stat. if you have power to stat and stat shows no voltage terminal to terminal then its closed and power is not getting to compressor, trace wiring and check .if power is getting to compressor the checjk start cap and relay . if they are good then compressor is bad , usually to expensive to replace.
