Question about Dryers

Whirlpool Dryer Front loader Plug issue I am trying to connect this in my apartment. I thought I could simply use the Stove plug however much to my surprise the plugs are different. Can I just simply go get a a new pigtail and attach it to the dryer or would this create a hazard? Tx. Comments: Apr 25, 2010 - ok I have gone to home depot and they don't have a dryer cord that matches the outlet? it is not the same...can't seem to find one anywhere.... Apr 25, 2010 - I need a dryer cord that has a flat prong where the prong is opposite the round prong....(basically replacing the '90 degree prong) I tried to find one online but no luck either.... Thanks Apr 25, 2010 - here is what the existing one looks like more or less...standard 4 prong dryer . i i L here is what i need . l l l Thanks Apr 25, 2010 - yes that is the outlet i have and that is the cord that i have... my question is will the dryer draw more power than it needs? i.e. as you say the range cord is 40amp so what is the risk if i put it on the dryer? will it burn the dryer motor out? will it burn the cord out? ( i suspect not...). Just wondering as the apt. comlex won't change the breakers... tx Apr 26, 2010 - Thanks makes sense... May 02, 2010 - Hi, another point on this...I converted the stove pigtial over and am just startng to use it. It is a used dryer and I have not used it befgore. When I have it on the normal setting it seems to 'smell' a bit like it is overheating...? is this possible? would it draw more power through the stove pigtail and overheat the element? I am going to use it on low for now.... any other comments on this would be helpful... tx

well I guess my assumption is that is is on a 40amp breaker as it is plugged into the stove plug?

    thoughts?

    Joe,

I understand your concerns however my impression from most others is that the motor or element may burn out and that would be the extent of it...damage to my machine...i can't get an electrician in i do not own... and i will always be here when the dryer is running.....

The smell as indicated has now dissipated so it likely was lint etc...

I suppose I could purchase a 30amp breaker and put it in the very old panel (large square one that you can pull in and out like shotgun shells..). I assume that would suffice as well?

If it smells like overheating there is the possibility that you have made an incorrect connection.

This is a 4 wire connection:

This is a 3 wire connection

Your dryer Circuit Breaker in the main power panel or sub panel (either) should only be a 30A breaker. If you have a 40 A in place your not connected per local codes. Should there be a fire as a result of this connection any insurance company would question the circuit.

I know your living in an apartment. The change in Circuit Breakers is something you need to work out with the management.

Your dryer if connected properly will only draw and use up to the maximum amperage on the power label of the dryer. Just because you have 40 Amps connected to it does not mean it will use 40 amps.

It is normal for a new dryer to initially have an odd odor. It will not last that long if it is connected correctly and vented correctly.

You did not provide a model number or I could have provided installation insturctions that would include power connections and venting requirements,

Thanks for using FixYa,

Hi again. In reference to your fuses. Yes in that style power panel it is a matter of pulling the handle down to open / shut OFF the circuit then changing out the 40 Amp fuses with 30 Amp Fuses the pushing the handle / arm back to ON. (The copper bars will physically dis-engage from the power bus bars.) If you have good tape you can tape the old 40A fuses inside the bottom of the panel inside a mini zip lock bag. Don't put them in a place that they can be touched when the power lever is moved. Glad to hear the odd odor has gone away. Lint does get dis-lodged when a dryer is moved and momentararily you will note the smell of lint.

    Thanks again for using FixYa.

Hello. I am concerned about your safety and I will tell you why. It sounds like you are using a 50 AMP stove outlet to operate your 30 AMP clothes dryer. HERE is the safety concern: That circuit breaker may not kick to off when you have an overheating situation since it is rated at 50 AMPS and not 30 AMPS. Please call an electrician to get your situation funnctional and safe. The cost will be nothing compared to your peace of mind and your safety, to say nothing about the safety of others. Joe

The cord size,as long as it is large enough is irrelevant.
If it it on a 30 amp breaker,it can only draw 30 amps etc.
The smell may be from old lint in the dryer shifting around and burning off.
Remove the rear exhaust vent and run the dryer to make sure you have good air flow.
Make sure the exhaust vent is not mashed or crimped.

That is a classic sign of a bad connection or a bad relay. You will have to take it apart to find the problem however be sure the power connections are good first.
