Question about Gateway GT5058 Desktop PC

GT5058 memory and boot issues

OK, this is a weird one. I am looking at a Gateway GT5058 desktop. It starts to boot up, but before Windows can load, it shuts off. I tried booting Ubuntu from a CDROM drive. I disconnected the hard drive, the CDROM drives, and tried to boot Ubuntu from a USB drive.

But, I can boot off of the flash drive and run the memory tests that come with Ubuntu. Even stranger, all of the tests pass multiple times.

So, I played with taking out memory. I cleaned the contacts. I can boot up with 1, 2 or 3 memory modules. It doesn't seem to matter which modules I put in or which banks I put them into. However, I cannot boot up all the way if all 4 are filled.

Since I disconnected everything, I'm not sure how it can be the power supply. If it is one of the modules, then I do not understand why it seems to be a problem only when I put in all 4. If it is the motherboard, same thing (why it only seems to matter when all 4 are used).

I cannot find a pattern, and I'm stumped.

If you are tired then you just simply format your system after taking back up of your important data

Windows does not start normally it will only start in safe mode

Did you add or remove any software recently? Seems that while uninstalling some system file essential for the OS is either deleted or renamed. Now the PC's OS will not function i.e. boot-up. Try repairing the OS if that option is available, restore it to date & time before any software was uninstalled(if its still retains to till that date), as a restore point. If all the above fail, reinstall the OS on C drive by replacing all the system files in the Windows OS, only draw back being that all the softwares present in your PC is reinstalled............sodeep

Try booting into safe mode by pressing F8 when boot up starts. Choose safe mode. When it's booted up, right click on "my Computer" and choose properties. Click on advanced and choose the advanced tab. Go to performance and change the settings of Virtual Memory to what Windows Recommends.Restart.

Sounds like the computer is coming from sleep, standby or hibernation mode. Go to the power settings in the control panel, and disable all of these options. Disable your screen saver as well. Leave the machine on for a day and see if it happens again after this. Post your findings, please...
