Compaq 6310US: Can't get into BIOS

I want to re-format the hard drive on an old Presario 6310US in order to do a clean re-install of XP, but I can't get into the BIOS to change the boot device order. Available info says to press F1 when Compaq logo is displayed but I've tried that several times with no luck. What am I doing wrong? Is there another way?

You can try removing and replacing the battery on the motherboard. If that does not work, you will have to look for the reset jumper on the board.

Many boot screens offer 2 options, one to change the boot order, a second to change the setup or bios.

the most common I've seen are F2 to change the boot order and "DEL" to change the Setup.

If you can't change the boot order with F1 or F2 then go to the setup/bios menu. You can change the boot order there as well.

It varies from machine to machine but the "Del" button is the most common to get at the Bios

If you can install an operating system (any operating system at all, XP, Vista, Linux, ...) the message from your BIOS is plain weired.

Other than that, you will probably need to replace the harddrive. Please let us know in case you need further help with that.

I have a Compaq Presario V3309TU Notebook PC. I reformatted the hard drive, now I could not install windows XP cd. The hard drive could not be detected. Can someone help me get the SATA Driver for Compaq...

The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a Compaq SATA drive on a disk etc and can install it when XP asks for a hard drive driver, then XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP.
The Fix.
Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive, this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then install XP normally, and all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

I cant find the hard drive when i want to install xp on my pc. and i cant play music as there is no sound cut. how can i solve this

Can the BIOS detect the hard drive?
If not then the hard drive maybe faulty and that is why the XP install cannot find the hard drive.
If this is the case then you need a new hard drive.

Installing windows xp

You cannot install Windows XP over WIndows Vista. Microsoft has put a lock on the Vista software and will not allow you to downgrade to a lower software. The only way you can do it is to wipe your hard drive completely clean first with a disk deleting software or with the command "fdisk" at the DOS prompt. However, this is dangerous and I do not recommend it unless you have someone professionally trained to do it. It will wipe everything off of your disk and then you can load Windows XP.

Compaq presario v3000 laptop..doesnt recongize the hard drive

I beleive that you are trying to install retail versions of XP which will not be able to detect the Hard Drive in the Notebook as it is a SATA drive and Windows XP will not be having the drivers for SATA Hard Drives by default.
In this situation, I recommend you to check and disable the SATA Native support  option available in the BIOS.
Start the Notebook and start tapping the F10 key which will take you to to the BIOS Setup window.
In this, go to the System Configuration tab using the Arrow keys and select the option as Disabled next to SATA Native Support.
Press the F10 key again to save the settings done and exit BIOS.
Now, you should be able to use the Windows XP disk and install Windows XP Operating System in your Notebook without any issues.
By disabling the SATA Native Feature, the Hard Drive of the Notebook will be detected as a IDE Drive because of which we will be able to install XP without any issues.

Donot Re-Enable this feature in the BIOS again as the Operating System may not boot. Let the option next to SATA Native Support be Disabled.
Hope this helps...

Files copy errors during the XP installation process are often an indication of BAD RAM.

If you have dual RAM modules, try install with 1 memory module installed
