This usually happens if the membrane of the sleep/wake button deteriorates and the gold plated contacts between membrane and logic board do no longer establish good contact.
There are specialized online tutorials with iPod Repair instructions that will guide you through the steps of taking it apart and reinforcing the contact or replacing the button altogether otherwise you'll have to send it to any third party iPod repair service and they'll replace the membrane for you.

You unplugged the thing before it was done. Hold the power button at the top and home button at the bottom for 10 seconds, then let go of the top power button while still holding onto the home button for 10 more seconds. This will reset the thing. Then just hook the ipod back into your computer and try again my friend.
