Hmmm..that buzzing is usually when the cd or dvd is not seated well in the tray..it's really a rattle from the drive attempting to seat properly

open the tray, inspect it for any materials that are not supposed to be there

or try another cd, perhaps..

My sound stopped working. How can i check to see if my sound card went bad.

Go to www.support.dell.com andselect "I'm looking for drivers and downloads". If you don't have theproper version of Adobe you will be prompted to install it. Once installedreturn to "drivers and downloads" and enter the "servicetag"(serial number) of the laptop.
You will need boot from this CD so that you are not loading your Operating System software (i.e. Windows XP or Vista).
To boot from a CD disk, power on your computer and tap the key to bringyou to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD into the top CD/DVD drive andthen select "Boot from CD/DVD" and hit key. Select the "Runthe 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics.

If all tests pass then reload OS ( Operating Software ).

The sound on my dell xps m140 does not work. All drivers are loaded but no sound

Had the exact same problem with exact same computer. Do the following:

1. check for virus, spyware, malware, etc.
2. uninstall driver and reinstall.

If you continue to have problems, check for sound using headphones or external speakers. If this works, order a set of speakers online and replace them. If this does not work then it's your sound card and for that you might need a pc repair tech. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

No sound on laptop

Updated the drivers for your sound card? it could be incompatible (not the correct driver) if prior to updating the sound still works.

Dell XPS M140 laptop shuts off after powering on

Most laptops that I have worked on that power off that quickly turned out to be an overheating problem. Is the cooling fan running for the brief period that you can hear the hard drive before it powers off ? If the fan is running another potential resolution might be to remove the processor and apply new thermal paste.
