Question about U.S. Robotics MAXg(USR9108) Wireless Router

1 Answer

The wireless network works intermittently.

It is the second occurrence this year. The wireless network comes and goes randomly. Connection via network cable is stable but wireless one is not. Moreover, at 0.5 m from the router I only get max 60% signal strength.

Found the solution myself. I suspect the cause is my new neighbor. He seems to have a PC with a wireless card that is left idle (i.e. is not paired with a wireless router yet). I see the card in AirRadar with a strange MAC (44:44:44:44:44) and the port/channel is said to be 0 (meaning it can be any value from 1 to 11). I believe that card was sending probes on channel 1 because for as long as I was seeing it in Air Radar, my wireless connection was unusable, while after midnight, when their PC was probably 'asleep', my wireless was working again.
I tried switching to channel 6 but there was still interference. I ended up on channel 11 which works a charm.
Conclusion: if your signal is intermittent (displaying shark teeth/irregular pattern), look for interference and play with the channels.

And that is the problem with wireless. Wire runs 10 to 100 times faster and is 100% reliable. If you must wireless ... you might get better service if you go to 802.11B (older technology)

Are you connecting via wired or wireless connection. If wireless there might be another device such as a cordless phone that is interferring, or your TV is just on the edge of the range for your wireless router.

I suggest that you investigate the router. You did not specify how the printer was connected, often wireless is an issue, if you are wireless, change the channel to 11. Many land line cordless phones, with the extended range, interfere on most router default channels.

The restart of the router is a pretty large clue, also connections in and out are suspect.

Having a hard time picking up wireless connection

We ran a typical Pavilion dv8000 Battery of tests, including games, applications, and a couple other areas. Time constraints limited the amount of testing we could get done before the NDA lift (and it's already a few hours late), but we will be providing a follow-up article with further testing and information. That said, if there are any specific areas that you'd like to see tested, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment.

Intermittent wireless Internet access

The problem started after you added the additional devices. Now you probably have all of your devices using DHCP which means the router provides an IP Address for your devices. Change the devices to have a fixed ip address. You may have to check the router for the default internal ip address, but it is probably 192.168.1.1 as the gateway. With the PC and laptop go to the control panel, then network connections, right clip on the connection and select properties, then scoll down the window until you see tcp/ip connection, select properties from the tab options below and set the ip address of each machine to 192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.11 and 192.168.1.12. set the gateway to 192.168.1.1 and set the dns ip to 192.168.1.1. Now if you have a different gateway address, use that as applied above. Save the settings and retry your connections.

Here is way you are probably having problems, wireless networks will drop and reconnect more often than a cable connection. If you were using just a cable connection, there would be less of a problem. When DHCP is being used and a computer drops the connection, it could get a totally different ip assignment the next time (a matter of less than a second of time). When that happens the original connection is lost. By fixing the ip address to be static, any time you reconnect via wireless, it uses exactly the same address, thus maintaining the connection.

Try it out and leave feedback if it works for you, otherwise send me the results of the test.

AIR BAG LIGHT AND CHIME RINGS PERIODICALLY

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee Limited and Had similar problem. Found out that a wire/connection harness had gotten cut under PASSENGER seat.from seats moving back and forth. It's part of the airbag system, it tells airbag system if seatbelt is fastened and if occupant is in seat. Since the wire is broken, it can't report back to air back system and activates the light. try this, hope it helps.

Using Vista Home Premium on Firefox, goes off line at times

Are you on a wireless connection or a wired connection? If you are on wireless, try changing the channel on your wireless router. You may be getting interference from another source/network.

If its a wired connection they try right clicking the connection and choosing "repair." This will correct several basic network problems. If that doesn't fix it, post back and further troubleshooting will be required.

Wireless Adaptor Issue

First make sure that your wireless router is set to broadcast (or if you prefer not to broadcast) your SSID (your wireless network name) or that your laptop wireless network connection properties is set-up to "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting".

To check this go to:

Click Start> Connect to>Show all connections>
Right click your Wireless Connection and select properties>
On the Properties box select "Wireless Network" tab >
Go to "Preferred networks" then highlight your SSID (network name)
Click "properties" button check "connect even if this network is not broadcasting". (while youre here check that your "Wireless network key" confgurations are correct).

Make sure that you are also set-up to "Obtain an IP Address automatically " and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"

To check:

Click Start> Connect to>Show all connections>
Right click your Wireless Connection and select properties>
Select "General" and under the heading "This connection uses the following items">
Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click "Properties" button

My laptop suddenly cannot connect to the router.

It comes down to a few things with routers and wireless connections:
1. If you have been dropping the signal over the past few weeks try doing a test on the wireless network connection via the diagnostic tool within the specific wireless connection.
2. You may have gotten a bad update to the wireless card. Try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it.
3. Try deleting the wireless connection for your router and then make 'a new' wireless connection.

Intermittent connection to wireless network

Two possibilities to consider --

There are reports the combination of a hidden SSID and WEP/WPA encryption causes intermittent connections using Windows. Recommended solution to show the SSID instead of hiding it.

Second possibility consider changing the channel the wireless communicates on in the router from the often default 6 to 1 or 11 to see if you can avoid interference on channel 6. Try the other channel if the first does not work. Interference is not only from routers but can be from in house wireless phones and other devices.
