I want to use mine soley to download books from the library and listen in my car. Once on the device, however, I cannot figure out how to pick up where I left off once I've turned it off. And when I forward through chapters, it goes 3 chapters at a time. I created a playlist, but this does not help.

The player does in fact play WMA files. However, if the audiobook is a protected audiobook that you purchased, the Coby device cannot play what is called DRM protected files. While Overdrive supports the playback of these files, the Coby player may not, or you no longer have authorization to play the file.
I report a solution from Portable player FAQ, let me know if it works: 1. Delete the title in the Overdrive Media Console program. 2. Then log into the Audiobook site at http://e.hbpl.org and click on My Account, My eItems Checked Out, and click the Download button the website to re-download the book. 3. Transfer the newly downloaded parts to your player.
I was having the same problem when I used Overdrive Media Console to transfer my audiobook files to my Sansa. I updated the license and retransferred and even tried changing the USB settings on the mp2 player. What finally worked? Using Windows Media Player to sync the files instead. When I hooked up my Sansa I chose "use WMP to sync files" and then I dragged/dropped the audiobook files to the mediaplayer window. The audiobook now plays without any problems since WMP made sure the files have the latest subscription update code.
If you are a newbie, and you primarily want the mp3 player for audiobooks, then go ahead and take this player back to the store - I'll tell you why: The deal between Audible and Philips fell through before the latest series of GoGear's was released. Therefore, even though the player has an Audible folder, it will not properly play Audible audiobook files. Sad, but true. Your post reminds me that I need to write a Consumer Watch article on mp3 players that claim to play audiobooks - 90% of them will not easily allow you to play audiobooks - you will have to jump through hoops. If you still want to try, here is what you want to do: 1. Delete any audiobooks off the GoGear, but make sure that you have a copy of the audibooks on your computer itself. 2. Open Windows Media Player. Find your audiobook files in your library. If they don't show up, then you will have to move your mouse over the Library tab - a small black arrow should appear underneath the word "Library" - click the black arrow and select "Add to Library". Click "Add" and find the folder in which your Audible files are stored. It may take several minutes, but Windows Media Player will add these files to Windows Media Player. 3. Right-click an Audiobook file starting with Chapter 1 of whatever book, and select "Advanced Tag Editor". One-by-one, manually assign an a track number to each audiobook chapter - Track 1 for Chapter 1, Track 2 for Chpater 2, etc. 4. Now, re-add the audiobook files to your GoGear. 5. You might additionally have to go into the Settings menu of your GoGear, and turn Shuffle mode off - your user's manual can show you how to do this. Sound like a lot of work? You betcherbottom dollar it's a lot of work. This particular mp3 player is not the best for audiobooks. -Tha Mp3 Doctor
I use a Creative Zen V Plus, but have a similar problem.
First, an explanation: the issue is probably with the timecode in the audio track. This can happen when the audio file is created on a computer. The audiobook was likely "ripped" to a file from the original audiobook CD, and your player may not like the format the file is in. The best solution in this case is to recreate the audio files yourself. First remove all of the files from your Sansa for that particular book. Then use CD-burning software on your computer to create an audio CD (not a data CD!) from the files you got from the library. Finally, use the software that came with your Sansa to transfer the audio CD back to your Sansa. This way you know you are getting a correct format on your player.
If you have an additional issue (like me) where the tracks are too long and go back to the beginning every time you turn your player off, you may have to use an audio editor such as Audacity to chop the long tracks up into smaller tracks, but this is quite time consuming. It is best to acquire audiobooks in smaller tracks in the first place. This is the problem I have been faced with while using Audible.com to listen to audiobooks.
Go ahead and hook your mp3 player up to the PC and hit the sync tab in Windows Media Player. Disconnect it safely and try playing one more time. If that fails, remove the audiobooks completely from the Sansa and reload them.
You might also want to double-check Sansa's website - it seems that one of their firmware upgrades related to Audiobook play.
ebooks are usually copyrighted or another type of audio format, you have to make sure the ebooks your trying to listen to are MP3 or Unprotected Windows Media Audio files, that is all this device will recognize.
This player will only recognize Audible audiobook files
There is not a fix for the pause/resume issue - it is a major problem for just about every mp3 player that claims audiobook compatibility

I bought a MuVo V100 specifically because a sister uses it very successfully for audio books. I'm still learning because it doesn't seem easy to do, but she managed fine. So don't assume it won't work for books.
The icons are confusing to deal with but the book will be in the "folders." When you find Library A, you push the button thing IN. Then you scroll sideways until your title comes up.
I've done it myself but kind of accidentally. Can't do it twice the same way!
Once I downloaded the newest firmware the audiobooks folder started showing up in the windows file explorer. So now I don't have to worry about using media player or anything else. I just plug in my sansa clip, open windows file explorer and drag the folders (1 for each disk) onto my player (into the audiobooks folder).
