you get this message when there is some hardware which is incompatible or fails / crashes during the installation of OS since you have tried a different hard disk already it cannot be that so try with a different Ram or update bios / replace motherboard.

Change the jumpers on the back of Hard drive 1 to slave, and the Jumpers on Hard drive 2 to master. Install both hard drives in system 2. Once that is done, boot to windows and drag and drop all the files from hard drive 1 to hard drive 2

May be a bios problem

Sounds like it is a hard disk issue. Corrupted MBR. Or missing Boot Loader. Your partition must be Fat32 since Win98 won't recognize NTFS. Try running chkdsk if not successful than repartition and format. BIOS is OK since you stated it will install windows. Corrupted BIOS won't allow pc to load. From a win98 bootdisk choose not to load cd. From the dos prompt type FDISK /Status If more than 1 partition check active partition settings.

When I am trying to load OS XP it is not working, but the system is running well with Win98

i think the hard disk might have got crashed or the cd from which your installing may consists some error (or it is unreadable ) ...
just try with other cd ....
or you might have installed some upgraded version of windows than the XP just for example :vista or media center etc .....
or you might be trying to install the XP in the drive which consist of the upgraded version of windows than the XP ....
just check these things and reply me ...
and tell me the what exactly error message you are getting while you go to install the XP ...

ASUS K8N-VM mother board win98 drives

Try going to the Asus website and look for support for your MB drivers and Operating System.

If there is no longer any Win98 support for your MB then I suggest a fresh computer and more recent software for less hassle!
A ten year old OS indicates to me that you might be stuck until you go with the flow!
Cruel but true.
Hopefully the recent cheap prices for computers pre-installed with Vista or XP will persuade you.
