Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

My Dell Inspiron 6000 won't boot up. It keeps

My Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop won't boot up. It keeps reverting back to the screen where you can boot in safe mode or normal mode, so it keeps attempting to restart unsuccessfully.

In that safe mode/normal screen it says to reinsert the windows disk and select repair, but the system does not acknowledge that there is a disk in the drive. It won't boot from the disk. In the DST short test, I received the error code 1000-1046. Does this mean the hard drive has failed or is dead?

Any advice would be appreciated, before I invest in a new hard drive.

Thank you.

Thanks very much for the advice. I was able to go in and change the boot order to boot from cd/dvd drive first. It has recognozed the disk and started the installation process, but it is a Vista upgrade and won't install from boot. I was able to get to the repair area and it is analyzing the system right how. I'm hoping it was a Windows crash and not the hard drive... I can install XP from boot and upgrade to Vista from there if need be.

I'll post the results when I know more. I'll lose a bunch of music and videos in the process, but luckily my laptop has become a recreational computer for me since I got my desktop computer last year.

    Thanks again!

Well, it's not the hard drive. XP installed and the computer booted up fine. Now I can install the Vista upgrade and all of my programs, and my dell drives (wireless) and I'll be back in business.

Thanks again for your help. Changing the boot order saved me from buying a new hard drive!

Hi:
The DST error code 1000-1046 is definitely a failing hard drive. ..I am not sure why your laptop is not recognizing a CD in the drive, but you should go into your BIOS settings, and in boot sequence, make sure that the CD drive is the first boot device. If you can't boot from a CD, you are not going to get very far with installing a new hard drive...

My Dell Inspiron 6000 (which I think I bought in

Have you tried this:
1. After removing the battery
2. Press and hold the power button for at least 10 sec.
3. Put back the battery
4. Turn it on

if this doesnt work, there could be a problem with your operating system. Try accessing safe mode if you can login .TAP F8 continously on the dell logo screen, and it will open advance boot options. (Just select safe mode) If safe mode boots properly try running system restore to restore it back to the previous date where your computer is still booting to windows. Hope this helps

Black Screen Dell 600 Laptop

Hi,
The display drivers maybe corrupt.

Boot the machine into safe mode. Right click on My Computer (XP) Computer (Vista) and select manage from the sub menu.
When the window pops up select Device Manager.
A device list will populate. When it has look down the list for Display Adapters. Click on the + icon next to Display Adapters to it expands. Right click on the display adapter and select uninstall.

Restart the computer and let it boot in normal mode.
If it boots in normal mode let it detect the Display and install the drivers for it.
I would be a good idea to update the display drivers via the Dell support website.

If it still won't display in normal mode please post back.

Good luck.

Keeps logging off

If you cannot log into windows in either the normal or safe mode, your repair options are limited.
You can try the following:
  1. Run diagnostics on the hard drive, see if it fails, if the drive fails diags, replace it.
  2. If the drive passes diags, then try booting to recovery console (Boot to XP CD, R at first prompt. Try running the chkdsk /r command.
  3. If no change, try a repair reinstall of windows.

Stuck on "loading your personal settings..." screen.

try booting to the SAFE MODE (F8 at boot) and see if you can log in to the ADMIN account from the safe mode. If you can, then create a new user profile, then reboot to normal mode and try booting to the NEW profile. If that works, then the old profile is likely corrupt

Your PC is not completing bootup. It's not the display, it's Windows.

Try booting to Safe Mode (F8) and running System Restore to a time before the issue cropped up. That should get the PC running again.

Dell Inspiron 6000 monitor display problem

Well it is most likely a issue with the Video driver as you are able to boot to the safe mode.I would suggest going back to the safe mode and deleting the present driver for the video from the device manager.before you restart the system just download the latest version from the support.dell.com so that you can reinstall it.Also check in the graphic properties which screen is set to be the defuat.Incase still not working i would suggest reinstalling the operating system before replacing any hardware.
