Question about Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

1 Answer

Decreased pressure when brewing - it still brews but no crema and when I take the brewing basket off to shoot steam through at the end of the brewing, it just "dribbles" out rather than shooting out with the usual pressure.

Probably the vibrating water pump is the problem.
It might be full of scale and it can not create any pressure or create less pressure than 9-10 bars or it is completetly damage and need to be replaced. ( you can remove the pump desasemble it clean it from scale and dirt and try it again but this requires very good expert skills)
For plastic ot other tubes no need to replace, just use a steel wire or a screwdriver in order to remove any scale or dirt inside them,

First we sugest to perform a descaling of the machine two times one in one day and another the second day and try again this will help the machine very much no matter what is the problem .
Second you should try to reduce by little the quantity of the grounded coffee used. Aprox you should use 7 to7.5 gr of coffee. If you try to use about 6 to 6.5 and you have the coffee runing out from the machine like in 25 sec you have about 30 cc of water.
Then try also to clean the group shower which it can be ansrew by one cetrer screw (and if you can you can open the machine and remove to clean also the coffee group solenoid valve). Both the valve and shower can be full of dry coffee that can blocked the way of water coming to the grounded coffee.
If you manage to clean everything above and the machine work ok so from now on in order to avoid the problem again try to flush water from the group many times without any coffee. With this is like you wash the group shower and valve from any remaining coffee.
Good luck

Hi There, the coffee machine did not exact any coffee, not sure whether it is to do with the pressure, the milk froth is still working

There are a few things that can cause this. If it brews without the portafilter in, then your coffee is too fine or you have a blockage in your basket if it has a ring in the bottom. You can clean the basket by using espresso machine cleaner like Cafiza or JoeGlo. Automatic dishwashing detergent works in a pinch also. ¼ teaspoon in the basket then brew like normal but stop after 3-5 seconds and let set for 1 minute. Repeat this for about 5 - 10 brews then rinse the basket and run 2 - 3 long shots of just water through the basket (brew) to thoroughly rinse the basket.
If it doesn't brew with out the portafilter in, then you have a blockage in your brew head. There is a screw that holds in the dispersion screen. Above that is a larger screw that holds in a check valve. If you can get the check valve out see if water will run through. If not your blockage is in this tube. Run a heavy wire up this tube for about 4 inches. Twist the wire as you go. Test to see if you can get water through. If so, reassemble and do a descale through both the wand and brew head. Use a strong descale the first time and then do a second. Descale 2 to 3 times a year to prevent this.

Jammed brewing unit

Remove the brew unit and check the screen under the red o-ring, find the 2 screws above the top piston and make sure the chamber that leads out to the tube is clear.

Solis SL 90 occasional pressure loss, only a few drips of coffee before it switches itself off. Cleaning sometimes helps or not using for a bit.

Very little coffee is coming out of my filter

Hi
If you are using the basket with the black ring in the bottom, it is probably getting plugged up with coffee residue. If this is the case, try using a pinch of automatic dishwasher detergent in the basket with no coffee. and brew like normal, but stop it when it starts to come out the spouts. Let it set for a couple of minutes and then repeat the process. Do this about 5 or 6 times then brew like normal and see if it doesn't clear. If it does, rinse the basket and brew 4 or 5 blank shots (no coffee). Then try to make a coffee. If it doesn't work the you might have to buy a new basket.

Our Nespresso Essenza C100 machine doesn't let the water out, but it pours it inside itself. What could be the problem?

When you make several servings of espresso consecutively, the pressure develops inside the brew basket. , be sure to relieve the build-up pressure before you remove the brew basket by turning the unit to "Froth" mode and allowing the steam to exit.

Steam still coming through brew group even when pump not ON

I posted response and solution to similar issue see post below and comments :

YOU NEED TO LET MACHINE COOL OFF AFTER YOU TURN IT OFF OUCH!!
You can release pressure placing a cup under steam wand open slowly and partially while machine is OFF and let hiss out slowly. Then open cup slowly if you have to force it open DON'T. That PUCK sound can make you afraid of your machine can't it. I wont admit I haven't done that four or five times.

We have a Saeco Classico that worked very well when we first got the machine. Now the coffee is bitter and there is no crema in the shot at all. We tried changing grinds and tamping, nothing seems to work. Can you help? Thanks so much. We miss our morning coffee :-)

Can't get tight fit between basket & steam ring

the proper replacement steam ring has an up-side & down side. the brew-head plate must be installed with the grooved side facing up; the steam ring has a groove in one side that fits over the top up the brew-head plate...does this solve the problem? if not, you may have the wrong steam ring/the brewhead plate may be installed incorrectly...oh, nov of 08...i seriously hope you've figured this out already. if not, you don't happen to still have machine in your possession, do you? if so, i'll buy it for $5.

Sissling when making espresso

First of all, do you steam your milk first then immediately brew the shot? If so, that is your problem. When you depress the steam switch, the temperature elevates way past what is optimal for brewing espresso. If you try to brew immediately after steaming milk or using the hot water feature, that would definitely be why your espresso sizzles. Your shot will likely come out burnt tasting, thin and just plain rancid.

Either brew your shot first (learn temperature surfing for your best shots), or immediately after steaming milk, turn off the steam switch, depress the brew switch (without portafilter in place) for a few seconds until no steam comes out- only water (wait till you don't hear the sizzling sound). Hope this helps.

Leaks under pressure

Hi
Your brew head gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced. remove everything and turn the machine on its top. Look ate the brew head inside there is a black gasket and it should be clean and flat. If its cut or curled it needs to be replaced. Not cleaning the brew head will cause this gasket to be cut and after a while it will curl and not seal.
