Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

2 Answers

I have a troybilt tuffy. The drive belt started smoking and no longer goes forward or reverse. Blades still work fine. What could be the problem? I've checked everything. The belt is on fine, it engages and starts burning in the front. Is something locked up in the back? How can I check?

Okay - I lifted it up and in with it in nuetral - one wheel spins backward and one forward. I put it in drive and the same thing. In either case, I could barely turn the pulley connected to the transmission after using all my strength. What next?

I don't know if that last message posted. But, aafter jacking it up, in neutral one back tire spins forward and the other in reverse. I tried to turn the transmission pulley and it wouldn't budge. I tried to put it in drive and it doesn't seem to be going because both wheels spin -one backword and one forward (like it did in neutral.

Hello my name is Heath it will be my pleasure to assist you. If the belt was smoking then it is probably shot and will need to be replaced. The problem is going to have to be investigated as to why he belt started smoking in the first place. Before putting then new belt on I would try turning the pulley on the transmission before putting the belt on to see if the transmission turns freely.

At first, I would think the bearing for the pulley is locked up. If you can spin the wheels in neutral and the pulley still doesn’t turn, I’m going to have to go with my first impression. Either your bearing rusted and your pulley is seized or you have some damage in the gear box. Either case, your drive transmission needs serviced. If you know of a lawn tractor servicer, you should give them a call and see if they can locate a used or new transmission for you or repair yours. Changing it yourself wouldn’t be too bad, trying to repair the old one could turn into a nightmare. If it were me, I would pull the gear box out and try to soak the spindle bearing with penetrating oil over night, then try to turn it. Don’t put too much pressure on it… you don’t want to cause more damage if you are planning on having it repaired. Best wishes, I hope this was helpful.

Confirm the park brake is off. If a hydro-static drive tractor starts but engagement of the operator controls for the transmission drive results in neither a forward or reverse drive of the mower itself, the operator should check that the manual bypass controls have not been left in the activated (bypass) position.

Look in to where the lever connects and confirm the movement. You should be able to hear the hydraulic oil with a slight whine as you activate the drive forward pedal!
See page 18 for bypass setting?

Troy-bilt riding mower won't move in forward or reverse

I had a similar problem with my TroyBilt 50 inch zero turn mower. Was cutting grass when it stopped going either forward or backward even though it would start and the PTO would move the cutting blades. Turned out the tensioner spring for the belt that drives the motors near the rear wheels had gone missing. Searched the yard where I had cut and moved the machine but couldn't find it. A new one cost me about $7.50. Put the new one on and it worked fine.

Check the drive belt. It has probably broken or has come loose.

No power when drive is engaged

Hi
Check your drive belt and the tensioner pulley that holds tension on the drive belt. Its possible for the tensioner pulley to be sticking and not putting enough pressure on the drive belt causing it to slip.
Grab hold of that tensioner pully and make sure it moves in and out freely against the drive belt.
