Hi, my os is a win2000 pro, the 2 usb ports on the rear side of my compaq nx 5000 seem to work fine, until I add a usb port replicator: none of the peripherals connected to the port replicator is seen, neither removable pendrive, nor printer. Peripherals direcly connected to the 2 usb ports work properly, instead. Pwr led on port replicator is on. System tells me that now 6 usb ports are available, each one having 500 mA of power... thus the port replicator is correcly seen, or this' what I think.
Why, if so, peripherals dont work?

Connect some other USB device (keyboard? mouse? memory-stick?) to your desktop?
Are those devices detected? If not, then either:
* the USB port(s) on your desktop are damaged,
* the device-drivers for the USB ports on your desktop are not installed.

Try connecting it to a different desktop/laptop, to see if the Seagate works at all, on any desktop.

HP s7700n - all USB ports have stopped working. Device Manager shows drivers are okay. I'm thinking the bridge chip on the motherboard has failed. Any other ideas?

Try to to refresh USB ports.

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external usb hard disk...usb hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.

Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main usb devices at the rear end usb port, as they require more power to initiate.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Damaged USB Port

Ok I think the best method to "Fix" this would be to get your self a 4 - 5 port USB card, they are, real cheap, insert it into a spare slot, inside your PC, and install the drivers, if any, and use that one. And simply ignore the other one all together.

Usb ports no communication with compurter but supplies power. what is wrong ?

Does the 'USB' branch of the tree show the USB ports?
Is there an 'Unknown Devices' branch of the tree?

Either way, the software "device-drivers" for the USB ports are not installed, or not installed correctly, and so you'll get the symptoms that you've observed -- power without device-recognition.

Access http://support.dell.com and click "Detect My Computer", and download and install the device-drivers for the USB ports.

My a4-tech camera was not working..i connect it to the USB port and its not detect

That may be not enough just to connect the camera. Sometimes it is necessary to install proper driver first (even before connecting camera to USB). You can check: http://www.a4tech.com/ennew/downloads.asp

You can check the installation of the device: connect the camera, right click on MyComputer, choose Properties, then Hardware, find your device in the list, double click it - that will show you status of the device: either it is working properly or not. If not you may need to update the driver, or even completely uninstall the device and install it again from scratch.

Of course, there is a chance that device is broken, but hopefully it is not the case.
Good luck.
