Dvd ram driver

I have a phillips dvdram sdvd8821h in my laptop, it will not read any format of disc cd dvd cd rom. the problem started after I tried to use a trail of a software called plato to rip some dvd,s to my harddrive. I have already tried to reinstall the driver in safe mode. I did a chat session with compaq and they said I would have to buy a new drive. I have checked the driver and it was Ok but it still does not read. I can auto eject the tray

My suggestion is that the Philips SDVD8821 Drives are ****... No firmware avaliable and it seems to me that they only last about a year and a half.. Just long enough to pass the warantee.

I also have a compaq notebook with this drive, and it will not read dvd's/software.
It is almost 2 years old. Shouldnt most drives last longer than this???

I HAVE COMPAQ PRESARIO C306US NOTEBOOK PC WITH PHILIPS DVDRAMSDVD8821H DVD WRITER. NOW CD IS READING BUT DVD NOT READING

This could be a problem with a driver. Try going to the phillips site and follow the step by step driver download instructions.

Also the dvd drive may be working but windows may not be playing the dvd because it does not have a default program to load it with. Open windows media player and then insert the dvd and see if anything happens.

What disks to buy? dvdr dvdrw dvd+ dvd-????

DVD stands for Digital Versatile/Video Disc, DVDR stands for DVD Recordable and DVDRW for DVD ReWriteable. If you're familiar with regular audio/music CDs or regular DVD-Video discs, then you will know what a recordable DVD looks like. A recordable DVD stores up to 2 hours of very good quality DVD-Video, including several audio tracks in formats like stereo, Dolby Digital or DTS and also advanced menu systems, subtitles and still pictures that can be played by many standalone DVD Players and most computer DVD-ROMs. If you choose to lower the video quality it is possible to store several hours video on a recordable DVD using low bitrates and low resolution with video quality more like VHS, SVHS, SVCD, CVD or VCD. It is also possible to have up to 4.37* GB ordinary data or mix DVD-Video and data on a recordable DVD that can be played by most computer DVD-ROMs.

There are three competing DVD Recording standards, DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW have pretty similiar features and are compatible with many standalone DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs while DVD-RAM has less DVD Player and DVD-ROM compatibility but better recording features.

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 80% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R and DVD-RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 79% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R and DVD+RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

DVD+R DL
DVD+R DL or called DVD+R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD+R. The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 computer GB* (called DVD-9) and dual layered double sides 15.9* computer GB (called dvd-18).

DVD-R DL
DVD-R DL or called DVD-R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD-R. The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 computer GB* (called DVD-9) and dual layered double sides 15.9* computer GB (called dvd-18).

I got this info from http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071016055835AApo5e6

If your dvdrom supports dvdrw I would suggest buying these disks as you can re-write over them if you need too.
Most recent dvdroms support all of the above.
I hope this helps

Ok almost ANY DVD CD that will physically fit into the space will do they are all more or less the same... Just get yaself a replacement bare DVD from ya friendly PC store and then simply open up the PC ya will see where the DVD is mounted, undo the screws holding it... remove the two cables the Data and Power they can only go on one way... replace the new DVD put screws back reconnect Power and Data .. ya good to go. Otherwise if ya don't wanna do that maybe get yaself an external DVD via the USB port... and just disable the old one in device manager and use USB one.. anyway GL.

those kinda players wont play DVD rom disks and certain ones that are made up. DVD-RAM or ROM wont work. Try blowing inside the player for any dust. if it still doesnt work its the maufacters problem. The player will play CD-G audio only, not graphics The ability to play back DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW, and CD-Jpeg discs may depend on recording conditions.
