It has been a long time since I worked with one of these, but there are timing holes on the band I believe. Either these holes are clogged up with paper dust and ink, or the optical reader system is starting to fail and is not sending the timing pulse fast enough.

like most printers, the Zebra is a dumb printer and will only do what it's told to do. Whatever software your using will have to send the Chinese symbols to the printer in the form of graphics.

I just unpacked my Brother 4070CDW after moving it from Portland, Oregon to Roseburg, Oregon last week. I had packed it in its original carton, complete with styrofoam, etc. I purchased the printer 9...

Ahh Im from Vancouver, You went backwards moving down there.. lol
As to your printer, I would check very carefully that no styrofoam got stuck in the printer anywhere.
Make sure the print head can move.
Make sure none of the print cartridges have come loose.
make sure none of the print cartridges are empty.
Just some things to try and check.
best of luck.

Printer is printing foreign looking characters all on its own. No print jobs are being sent to the printer. Printer is set to DEC mode and the macro has been reloaded several times. As soon as you put the...

It sounds like data is being received by the printer from an outside source.
Try disconnecting the printer from the computer system so it is a free standing printer. Power the printer ON and put in ONLINE if you do not get strange characters printing the print job is definitely from the computer system some place.

If you do not get the print jobs printing when the printer is disconnected from the computer system, it could be that the print jobs are being sent from the wrong driver or print queue on the system, you may need to try to identify who is sending the rogue print jobs.

Prints out 13 stickers with strange characters

Is this a 2844Z? the 2844 is an EPL printer and the 2844Z is a ZPL printer. Since your have described the printer as 2844 but mentioned that you are performing 3-flash proceedures, it sounds like you have installed the wrong driver. uninstall the driver and install the LP2844z driver so that you can send the correct print language to the printer. If this is not the case, then you need to clarify:
What is your model?
Details about the driver installed?
Firmware version of your printer?
Connectivity? (Serial, USB or Parlallel)?
What are the characters that are coming out on the page? ASCII -Extended?
