If there is a bios update available you can just download it from the Acer support page for your laptop. These are usually a windows based program these days so youjust save to your desktop, turn off every thing and close all the programs, make sure the power adapter is plugged in and run the update. Let it run and it will reboot or ask you to when done and thats all there is to it.

You will need to know your model number ie AO532 and then just click on the bios tab when you get to your model page and downlaod the files. There are some updates to fix the touchpad and other things. Just use the latest date and you should be good.

Is there a good reason to flash your BIOS? You have a good chance of ruining your computer ... is it worth the risk?

If there is a update ... of course it is possible. Acer has a good section on this process.

Aspire notebooks are designed with personal entertainment in mind, but when your monitor blacks out after only a few minutes, it's somewhat difficult to be entertained. There are several potential causes, as well as a few different ways to fix this problem.

Possible Causes This problem can be caused by your laptop entering sleep mode, overheating, damaged or faulty components, an improperly seated monitor cable, low battery and/or screen resolution set outside the monitor's range. Sleep mode is the most likely culprit, particularly if you're using your laptop on battery power. b> Prevention/Solution Sleep mode settings are located under "Power Options" in the Control Panel. Damaged components can be replaced by Acer if you send your Aspire in for repair. Routine cleaning of the exhaust ports and upgrading the cooling system can fix overheating. Plug your laptop into a wall outlet via the adapter to see if low battery power is the problem. Boot into Safe Mode to adjust monitor resolution if you can't do so normally. b> Considerations Acer will typically provide service for damaged laptops under warranty, typically for only the cost of shipping. They can also repair computers which are no longer under warranty, though you'll have to pay the full price for servicing. You can open a ticket with the support department to try and determine what your problem is as well. A recall has been issued for Aspire models AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG made before September 15, 2009, because of a problem with the microphone cord that causes overheating if pressure is applied to the left palm rest.

One of the most common ways to update (or "flash") the BIOS on a computer is by using a standard USB flash drive. If a new update is available for your BIOS, you'll need to flash it to update it. Short for "basic input and output system," the BIOS is the main program on your computer and will periodically need to be updated to ensure that your machine stays functioning the way you want it to. Though it is an incredibly important procedure, updating the BIOS from a USB flash drive won't take more than a couple of minutes to complete.

Insert the USB flash drive that you want to use to flash your BIOS into your computer. Download the update for your BIOS from the website of your BIOS manufacturer. (The manufacturer of your BIOS will be listed in the instruction manual that came with your computer.) Copy the BIOS update file onto your USB flash drive. At the same time, make a note of the exact name and extension of the update file. Do not remove the USB flash drive from your computer. Restart your computer. Press the key required by your computer to enter the BIOS. This key will be written down on the screen. Press this key immediately as your computer starts to turn itself on. Highlight "Boot" and then hit "Enter" to select it. Change the piece of hardware listed under "Primary Boot Device" to reflect your attached USB flash drive. This will tell your computer that you want to restart your computer and boot from the flash drive. Select "Save Changes and Exit" to restart your computer. Wait a few seconds for a command prompt to appear on your computer screen. The command prompt is an entirely black screen with a small line of white text that you can type on. Once the command prompt appears, type in the name of the BIOS update file on your USB flash drive. Then hit "Enter." Hit the "Y" keyboard key a single time to tell your computer that you want to update your BIOS. Your existing BIOS version will be upgraded (or "flashed") to the new version via the file on your USB flash drive. Do not remove the USB flash drive from your computer during this process. Remove the USB flash drive from your computer once the BIOS update process is finished. The update program will indicate when the process is finished. Your computer will automatically restart itself and your BIOS will be updated. Bios definition http://www.butterscotch.com/tutorial/What-Is-A-BIOS

Bat bios checksum problems solve

Step 1:
Update ASUS BIOS b> Insert bootable floppy disk or USB drive. Copy the updated BIOS file to floppy disk or USB drive.
(Note: BIOS file and boot files should fit on a floppy disk. If the BIOS file is too large to fit with boot files, consider using the EZ Flash method described below.) Insert the motherboard support CD into optical drive. Copy AFUDOS.EXE from CD to a floppy disk or USB drive. Reboot. When the DOS prompt appears, type the following: afudos /i[name of BIOS file]For example, "p4c800b.rom" might be the name of the new BIOS file. "afudos
/ip4c800b.rom" is the command that will install it. Wait. Your monitor will display the update's progress with a series of messages: "Reading file," then "Erasing flash," then "Writing flash." The "writing flash" message will be followed with a percentage counter that tells you how far the write has proceeded. The final message will be
"Verifying flash." DO NOT switch off or reboot at any point in this process or you will ruin your motherboard. After the update is complete, the utility will return to the DOS prompt. Remove your floppy disk and reboot. Enter the BIOS Menu and load "Setup Default." Save and reboot. You're finished. b> Update Using EZ Flash Copy your new BIOS files to a floppy disk or USB drive. Reboot. When the system is at POST, press "Alt" + "F2" to enter EZ-Flash. Alternatively, on late model motherboards you may press "Delete" to enter BIOS setup, then access EZ-Flash from the "Tools" option on the navigation bar. (Select Tools > ASUS EZ Flash 2 > YES) Wait for your system to check current BIOS information. Insert your floppy or USB with the new BIOS file. Select the drive letter with the BIOS update file, then select the file. Wait for your system to check the update file. After the file check is finished, click "Yes" to update your BIOS. Wait. Let the update procedure run until it finishes. Do not switch off or reboot or you will ruin your motherboard. When the update is finished, remove the floppy or USB drive and reboot. Enter the BIOS Menu and load "Setup Default." Reboot. You're finished. b> Update Through the Internet If it isn't installed already, install the ASUS Update utility. You can either download it or use the copy on your motherboard's support CD. Close all Windows applications if any are running. Launch the ASUS Update utility from the Windows desktop by clicking "Start>Programs>ASUS>ASUSUpdate>ASUSUpdate." The "ASUS Update" main window will then appear. Select "Update BIOS" from the "Internet option" drop-down menu. Click "Next." Select the ASUS FTP site nearest you, or choose "Auto Select." Click "Next." From the FTP site, select the BIOS version that you wish to download. Click "Next." Start the update. Wait for it to complete.

Where to download drivers to update the BIOS for my IBM desk-top

Ha! Old OS, old URL; possibly just an old desktop not up to the task of running WinXP.
It's a new BIOS you'd flash your system with, and probably a push between your motherboard's BIOS having an update (you'd go to the mobo's maker's site, e.g. that of ASUS, Gigabyte, Intel, etc.; read the screen-print on the board; to get the update) and telling WinXP to install anyhow using a handy force-install option.
