Install camera software before connecting the camera, and ensure the cable is working. Unplug computer power cord for ten minutes, if it is a laptop also remove battery, this will reset computer. Provide details on camera model and connection used (USB, firewire?) to get more detailed answer.
Very easy to replace door. Remove base plate (3 screws). Remove 1 screw found in battery compartment. Lift corner of battery compartment (right where you took the screw out) up about 1/4". No more or you will break the opposite corner. Use a piece of picture hanging wire and push the hinge pin from the outside toward the inside until you can grab it with tweezers and pull it right out. Rest is simple.
