Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

1 Answer

Camera turns itself off too soon. There must be a setting to change the length of time from when you turn it on until it turns itself off, which is currently about 15 sec. Very annoying when you turn it on the camera comes on and works fine. If you wait more than 15 seconds the camera is off and the only way to get it back on is reach to the on switch and turn it on again. By then your subject is no longer smiling This should be very simple to find in the manual. Apparently the feature is not named "Off Timer" or "Auto off" or anything I can think of. RTFM 3 times cover to cover but willing to be shamed.

Are you sure it's off? As a power-saving feature, the camera shuts down but not off...a slight press of the shutter button should wake it up.

Hi Doug,
You are right in identifying the cause of the pre-mature shut-down of the camera during video recording. Battery saving features (auto-shut down) detect the camera as idle while you are recording. you could do two things to avoid this;
1. A short term practice is to manipulate the camera to stay on by using the zoom button, taking a snap-shot or anything like that from time-to-time, before the 2 minutes is up. This will keep the camera awake long enough for you to record a good length of video.
2. The second and permanent option is to program the camera - just as you mentioned. You can do that by opening the menu and under camera setting , scroll down till you find the auto-power save. Change the time to your preference

Please note: You have to switch off your camera as soon as practicable while the auto-switch-off time is set at a bigger value to conserve the battery. otherwise the battery will be drained quicker than you imagine.

I hope this helps.

SONY HDTV-LCD MODEL - KDF-42WE655 turns itself off. Lamp light indicator flashes red. Should I attempt to reset ? It is approx. 4 years old

I'd wager that somewhere in the menu settings, there is a "Sleep Timer". Check the menu for the sleep timer, which turns off the TV after a set length of time. Also, check your remote, there might be a "Sleep" button that would do the same thing, press it multiple times until it reads "Sleep: Off" or something similar.

THE CAMERA GOES DEAD VERY SOON WHEN IT TURNS ON. IT HAS GOOD BATTERIES.

Hi, I've scoured the 3 page manual and come up with this.:-
There is nothing wrong with your camera. The camera has a built-in power saving
feature that turns the camera off after 30 seconds of inactivity (default setting) to
conserve battery power. The auto off time setting can be changed in the set up menu.
Changing the Auto Off Time Setting:
1. Set the camera to Camera Mode.
2. Press the Menu button to display the main menu.
3. Press until the Setup is highlighted.
4. Press to enter the Setup submenu.
5. In the Setup menu, press to highlight “Auto Off Time”.
6. Press to enter “Auto Off Time”. Press to highlight the time you want.
7. Press the OK button to save your selection.
Hope this helps

How to change turn-off time from 20 minutes?

Power Save mode allows your machine to reduce power consumption
when it is not in actual use. You can turn this mode on and select a length
of time for which the machine waits after a job is printed before it
switches to a reduced power state.
1 Press Menu until System Setup appears on the bottom line of the
display and press Enter.
2 Press Enter when Machine Setup appears.
3 Press the Scroll buttons until Power Save appears and press
Enter.
4 Press the Scroll buttons until the time setting you want appears
and press Enter.
5 Press Stop/Clear to return to Standby mode.

Camera will turn on and then turn off, while screen continuously flashes

I have had this problem with both a DSC-P72 and a DSC-P92 (same camera but 5 Mega pixel1.gif) They do need real good batteries, when the camera shut’s down I can run MP31.gif players or flashlights with those batteries for quit a while before those devices are dead.

I was traveling overseas once and installed “fresh” carbon batteries and the camera wouldn’t work at all. I had no photos on that trip until I found some alkaline batteries.

I even have bought 2 “dead” cameras1.gif to find that they work fine with REALLY GOOD batteries. So try it again before dumping the camera.

Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.

Won't stay turned on!

IF YOU GO IN TO YOUR CAMERAS MENU AND OPTIONS YOU WILL FIND A SETTING FOR THAT. EITHER UNDER POWER SAVER OR MAIN CAMERA OPTIONS AND SETTINGS. I HAD TO CHANGE MY DELAY TIME TO MAX. ALL CAMERAS NOW HAVE A TIME DELAY BEFORE POWERING OFF TO SAVE YOUR BATTERIES. ITS A GOOD IDEA IF YOU ACCIDENTLY SET YOUR CAMERA DOWN AND FORGET. BUT IT IS A PAIN WHEN IT COMES SET FOR 5 SECONDS. HOPE THATS ALL IT IS
