Question about Briggs & Stratton Power Products 5,550 Watt Portable Generator #30241

1 Answer

Started pressure washer first time this year. Engine started on first pull. turned off choke, a small amount of mist came out nozzle at the beginning. It looked like it was trying to build pressure. You could here the change on engine. Then nothing, no water at all while squeezing handle. Engine still should like it is trying to build pressure

The bypass valve in the pump has stuck. Very common problem.

The valve shuts off additional water input once the pressure builds up.

The O rings in the valve deteriorate and stick in the position so new water can't get to the pump.

Rebuild the valve with new O rings and it will be good as new. Clean the bore of the valve when you have it apart.

My pressure washer doesnt seem to run properly. i have changed the fuel, air filter, spark plug and the oil. It will start but runs poorly.

Ok the first thing you need to check is if the spark is fireing. To do this you need to remove the plug plug it into the spark plug cap hold it on the cylinder head pull the engine over it will pull easy and see if you have a blueish spark jumping the gap on the plug . If you do its not an electrical prolbem . Then put the plug back and plug the ignition wire back and remove the air cleaner see if it will start then .witch the choke on . If it still won't start try pouring a small amount of fuel derictly into the carbuator if it runs for any time at all or even starts to fire then its a fuel issue eighter bad fuel or clogged filter or carbuator needs to be cleaned. You can even put a small amuont of fuel right into the spark plug hole then put the plug back in and it should start You need spark fuel and air for any engine to run if you have all three its automatic it will at least fire Good luckwith this

Having a difficult time starting engine. I tried with the choke all the way out, and the throttle shut down, I tried with the throttle half way open, and the choke half way out, and I can't get the engine...

I have the same problem with my craftsman - I hold the trigger open on the wand as I pull the start cord. I also put some Sta-bil fuel stabilizer in the fuel to help it run. You may have broken an O-ring if you started your washer without water hooked up - it only takes a second to bully that o-ring. If so, either find your manual or call the dealer to see if they have another one so you can copy or at least look at the manual to know the how and where.
Hope this helps!

What would cause a pressure washer to cut off after you pull the handle to get the water started

We used power washers for years

When you pull the trigger, the engine is supposed to accelerate because the back-pressure on the pump is released.

The back-pressure is why you're supposed to keep the gun trigger open when starting the engine. It sounds like you're starting the engine with no water passing through the gun.

Inspect the exhaust port >> if exhaust is clogged with carbon or dirt, then the engine will not run at high speed.

The problem may also be cause by a rusted choke lever. If you notice when a small engine accelerates, the choke lever moves up as the carburetor demands more gas.

Start the engine with water passing through the gun >>> move the choke lever a little bit at a time and see what happens. Keep water going out of the gun. When the surfaces are cool, spray WD-40 on the lever and see if you can free it up. WD-40 is extremely flammable.

If your engine will not fire at all by starting with water passing through the gun, then your gas supply might be limited or your carburetor gummed up. Pull off the rubber gas line that connects to the carburetor and see if gas flows.

Next, pull off the air filter and see if the machine runs good without air filter. You may have clogged air filter.

While the carburetor is exposed, spray WD-40 into carburetor. See if you can get engine up to full throttle while spraying WD-40 into carburetor. Keep spraying the WD-40. Keep the water flowing out of the gun.

If the engine throttles up all the way on WD-40 but won't run without it, then your carburetor is probably gummed up.

Our old power washer won't run with the choke set at full throttle. We just got into the habit of leaving the choke alone. We'd pull off the air filter and spray WD-40 into the carburetor so the engine would spark healthy without messing with the choke at all. And we kept the choke about 2/3 open all the time.

Engine will not start, almost sounds like it is backfireing out of the carburater ,I cleaned out the old gass and put new in, cleaned gas lines, blew out carb with air two times, it ran for about 10 seconds...

Pour a large amount of carb cleaner into the gas tank
With choke on full, pull cord often to work carb cleaner into carb and then let it sit for a day or four.
Your carb is dirty for sure.
The venturi and jets are so small on these carbs that they are easily clogged with gunk from old gas

Doesnt build pressure up ,it just runs right without pressure does the compressor require being oiled?

HELLO THERE:
Here is some troubleshooting tips for you and a web link for you ok this should help
best regards michael
Troubleshooting Your Pressure Washer troubleshooting_pressurewasher.jpg General points to check if a problem occurs
  • Are the engine and fuel switches in the “ON” position?
  • When troubleshooting, always check oil and gas levels.
  • The oil for the pump is a 30W non-detergent mineral oil. Do Not fill over halfway on the sight glass.
  • Is the water tap open?
  • Check the choke and throttle levers.
  • Is the correct nozzle in the lance? Is the nozzle plugged?
  • Only the black nozzle is for soaping at low pressure.
  • Is the water-inlet screen clogged?
  • Hold the gun trigger open while pull starting the engine.
  • Check for O-rings in the lance and quick couplers.
  • Has the unit tipped over? Close the fuel switch and keep pull starting the engine until the excess fuel is burnt up, then open the fuel valve and try again. Some engines will need to be primed every time they are started.
  • Make sure the engine is turned off after each use. It should not be left running without use for longer than 2 minutes as the pump can overheat.
Are you experiencing low pressure?
  • Is there an air leak?
  • Dirty pump valves?
  • Check for worn pump valves or broken valve springs.
  • Check for a worn out spray nozzle.
  • Check for leaks in your plumping or hoses.
  • Troubleshoot your nozzle, is it turned to the highest pressure setting?
  • Is the unloader improperly set?
  • Are the engine RPMs too low?
  • Check if your water supply is sufficient.
  • Check if your engine is getting enough power.
Trouble with high vibrations
  • Dirty pump valves?
  • Do you have a sufficient water supply?
  • Is there are in your water supply?
  • Is the inlet water filter clogged?
  • Clogged or damaged spray nozzle?
  • Make sure it has the correct fuel
  • Has the choke been left on after the engine has warmed up?
If the engine won’t start
  • When troubleshooting the engine, check if it's low on fuel or oil?
  • Worn or dirty spark plugs?
  • Is the switch in the off position?
  • Is the fuel valve in the off position?
  • Is the engine flooded from over choking?
  • When cold starting, was the engine properly choked?
If the starter is hard to pull
  • Low oil in the crankcase or pump assembly.
  • Oil or fuel in cylinders (hydro locked).
  • Pressure built up in the system, relieve this by squeezing the trigger.
