what you have is a problem thats hard to diagnose. i've seen few systems with the same problem. what happens when i put a disk is the ps3 is that the round icon spins in the top right corner spins as if its loading the games/movies. but after few minutes the icon disappear and there is no icon of the disk under the game/movie tab. the easiest
thing you can try is to clean the lens. along with checking the
cables that connect your drive to the motherboard and
etc.. if that didn't work you can try replacing the whole drive
-- *NOTE* if you do change the drive make sure you buy the right type
and also when u buy a new drive you will be getting the drive/moter only
and not the control board that is attached underneath . you'll have to
put your old control board onto the new drive hopefully you get
your drive working after these steps if not you will be getting into
more complicated fixes. this is one of the sites that i come
across alot that fixes different ps3 problems
still if that didn't work you may need to replace couple of things
on the drive board which can get very technical. very technical because
in 2 ways. 1) your ic chip may be bad and you could try replacing
that on your control board but that involves desoldering/soldering near
many other component of the board. very trickly 2)if after you
replaced the chip and it still didn't work you may have more than 1
problem on your control board in which case you just need a new control
board but the thing is there is another chip that (the nand chip which
holds the firmware of your ps3) is married to the (main) mother board and
without that chip your ps3 will not read/load/operate any of the disk or
downloaded games on your ps3 hard drive.
so just swapping the control board won't work. So you'll have to buy a
new control board and swap out the nand chip. again very technical and
not for a novice. even some repair shops send it off to do these fixes
to a more specialist if your ps3 is still under warranty its
just best to send it off to sony
and let them fix it for free. they cover your system for a year from
the date of purchase. and you may or maynot get your original system
    back. check youtube
for "replacing ic chip on ps3" or "replacing nand chip on ps3" you'll
find that some people have actually fixed their systems.

Update 3.30 just bricked your PS3. A future firmware update may fix this but so far Sony is denying any knowledge and telling users to send their console back to them.

My play station doesn't recognize dvds or games I put them in and no icon comes on and it doesn't paly

The Playstation 3 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser does eventually burn out. The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the game will stop reading altogether (even though movies sometimes still work). Eventually movies will stop working and the whole laser will eventually die.

The following website sells PS3 lasers and also performs repairs:

The ps3 will not read or recognize any disc we insert. games or movies. it does operate properly with the internet

This is the 2nd most common problem with PS3's. This isn't a bad problem. Your laser/lens will need to be replaced. Do you see the time clock in the top right corner going around and around? If so, you are just having laser/lens problems. If you do not see the time icon spinning when you insert a disc, your PS3's Blu Ray drive controller board has gone bad and you will need to send it to Sony and not a 3rd party technician. Certain problems are only repairable by Sony. Good luck.

Hi, I have an iPod 8GB. When I turn it on, the screen appears with the msg "Slide to unlock" so I slide it to the right and it always opens to the music section. No matter which side I touch, I do not seem...

Have you tried pressing the round button below the screen...if pressing that doesnt return you to the menu then you may have a button problem.

PS3 wont read any games, dvds or cds

I have the same problem. My PS3 stopped reading any bluray discs. The spinning circle in the top right corner will come on for a few seconds when a disc is inserted, but then nothing. I found a work-around to get it to read discs though. You have to have a bluray disc in the drive (game or movie) and start a downloaded game or Playstation Home. Once the game or Home loads, hit the PS button on the controller. The crossbar menu will pull up and you will notice the disc icon will (magically) pop up. Click the quit game icon. Once you are out of the downloaded game or Home the disc icon will still be there. You can then load the game or disc. The icon will remain there until you eject the disc, so you will have to repeat this every time you want to load a game. Although this is a workaround to prevent Sony from gouging you for $150+, this is still not a fix. A fix would be for Sony to admit they have a money making firmware problem and fix it. This fix will only work if you don't have an actual hardware failure (which I apparently don't). I think a class action lawsuit is in order for everyone that has this problem and especially for those who have shelled out the money to fix something that is firmware related. I'm sure Sony will only fix the firmware to make this workaround not work anymore so as not to lose their little cash flow scheme.

Could be as simple as you put the UMD with wrong direction.

The UMD games are universal, which mean any game can be played on any psp. But the UMD movies are region specific, you can only play UMD movie with the region set according to your psp.
