Hi,

Before You Install an Interior Slab Door

Installing an interior slab door is a job best left to a professional, because extreme care must be taken in order to ensure a proper, level fit. If you're handy with tools and have made similar home improvements, however, you can install an interior slab door by yourself. To do so, you'll need these supplies:

* A slab door the same size as your current door
* Doorknob hardware (lockset)
* Hinges
* Drill
* Lockset hole saw kit with pilot bit
* 3/8-inch drill bit
* 7/8-inch spade bit
* Screwdriver
* Utility knife
* Chisel
* Tape measure
* Pencil to mark measurements

The first thing you'll want to do is remove the existing door from the door frame. Don't discard the old door yet; you'll need it to mark the positions for the hinges and lockset on the replacement slab door. You'll also need to measure the dimensions of the door you're replacing in order to purchase a new slab door that fits properly.
How to Install an Interior Slab Door

1. Using the old door as a guide, take your pencil and mark the new door with the position of the hinge mortises, latch hole and doorknob (lockset).
2. Attach the 3/8-inch drill bit to your drill. Drill a shallow guide hole in the face of the slab door to mark the center of the hole where the door handle will be inserted.
3. Drill a shallow guide hole in the edge of the door where the center of the latch hole will be positioned.
4. Attach the hole saw to your drill. Cut the opening for the lockset in the face of the door, using the hole you made in step two to position the pilot bit. Press firmly as you drill, making sure you're going in straight. Pause often and clear out the sawdust. Stop cutting when the pilot bit of the hole saw pokes through through the other side of the door, but before the teeth of the hole saw break the surface.
5. Switch to the other side, inserting the pilot bit into the hole, and finish cutting the opening. If you cut the hole from one side only, you're likely to have ugly tearout and splintering on the door surface.
6. Attach the 7/8-inch spade bit to your drill. Using the guide hole on the edge of the door that you made in step three, drill a hole through to the inside of the lockset hole you made in steps five and six.
7. Slide the latch mechanism into the hole you just drilled so that it protrudes from the edge of the door. Position the beveled edge of the latch so that it will face toward the doorjam.
8. Place the rectangular latch strikeplate over the latch on the edge of the door. Trace the outline of the latch plate, then remove and set aside the latch mechanism.
9. Use your chisel to cut along the outline of the latch strikeplate. You should cut no deeper than the thickness of the latch plate, about 1/8 of an inch.
10. Place the beveled edge of the chisel against the wood and gently drive out the waste. Reinsert the latch hardware, making sure that the strikeplate lies flush with the edge of the door. Follow the instructions that came with the lockset to finish installation.
11. To install the hinges, use the original door to determine the position of the hinges on the new door. One way to do this is to lay the new door atop the old one, then use a ruler to trace horizontal guidelines for the top and bottom of the hinge hardware from old door to the new.
12. Place the hinge hardware on the edge of the new door, using the horizontal guidelines you traced in step 11. Trace the vertical edge of the hinge mortice with a pencil.
13. Using your chisel, hollow out the area you outlined so that the hinge mortice will lie flush with the edge of the door. You should cut no deeper than the thickness of the mortice.
14. Replace the hinge mortice in the hollowed-out area along the door edge. Predrill the holes for the hinge screws, and then attach the hinge plates.
15. Reattach the door to the doorframe. You may need assistance to do this.
16. Open and close the new door repeatedly to check for a smooth swing, a good catch on the locking mechanism and a good fit.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

I have a kenmore upright freezer model 970-254326 bought in 2011 from sears. The door opens left to right but in my tiny apartment I NEED it to open from right to left just to put things in and get th

You should see some plastic plugs or holes for mounting bolts on the opposite side of the freezer case. The latch mechanism should adapt from one side to another.
You would remove the top hinge and then lift the door off of the bottom hinge. Then you would remove the bottom hinge and switch it to the other side. Place the door onto the bottom hinge and then install the top hinge on the other corner of the case to match.
You should be able to move the handle from one side to the other. The magnets in the doorseal should work as before to keep the door closed. The interior light is usually centered on the bottom to aid in reversing the door opening.

How do you replace drives side exeior door handel for 95geoprizm

1) Remove the plug inside the interior armrest and remove phillips screw.
2) Remove armrest and two screws that hold door panel to door frame.
3) Pop the outer cover off the interior door handle.
4) Remove the interior lock knob and remove door panel by popping out tabs connected to door frame and lifting up off of window ledge.
5) Remove the two nuts holding exterior handle in place.
6) Disconnect the L shaped linkage from the handle. The trick to getting the L shaped linkage into the new handle is to feed L shaped metal pole through hole in door where exterior handle was, leaving the lower end of this linkage in its slot.
7) Feed the end of L shaped pole through the plastic 'hinge' in new handle by folding the hinge over and pushing the end of the L through both sides of the plastic hinge at once. slide the lower loop of the plastic hinge down the L shaped pole to secure pole to handle.
8) Place new handle into door and reverse the process to reinstall interior panel.

Hope this helps Tim

Lost instructions for plastic hinge jig

This is a home owner's jig for mortising **** hinges, It will not do production runs , that's for sure. It has to be layed out to start, but great for cutting one door. Do you have the router guide for it? Your hinge sticks out of the door on the side that it swings on, and it leaves about 1/4 inch of door on the other edge, the top and bottom are measured from the top and bottom of the door and you have to figure the thickness of the guide and make a test run on a scrap. The depth should be flush with the hinge. The standard way of measuring is, 7 from the top, 11 from the bottom and center in between the 2, they don't do that anymore, they just slap them in a pre-hung jig that mortises upside down, backwards, up, down, doesn't matter. all the same now days, only problem is you can't get a punch under the hinge to pop out the hinge pin if you have to. The card you have might have the dimensions on it for holding off the line. Hope this helps.

How hard is it to replace a door on a 1997 honda accord 4 door. Specificly the front drivers side door.

It's not too hard if you get one with the same features and interior panel. If you have to change the door panel though it's no big deal. Don't go unplugging all the little wires in the door because there is a main plug inside of a rubber boot in between your door hinges: Pop the little pin out of the little holder bar, remove the 12mm bolts that hold the door on. If you don't get help holding the door you can scratch some stuff up. You might have to remove your fender, don't know on this one.

Thermador oven (c301u) door hinges weak, how to install new hinge

This is a relatively easy fix however you will need to remove the door and it is heavy!

Start by opening the door completely and engage the small "locks" that are at the base of the hinge. This will ensure that the spring loaded hinges do not "spring open" when you remove the door. You then will need to remove the hinges from the door via a series of phillips head screws that hold the hinge assembly in place. The new hinges must be "preloaded" into the Open position using a vise or some means of holding the hinge in place while you use a small section of pipe to provide leverage needed to open the hinge so that the Locks can be engaged.

Once the new hinges are "pre-loaded" and the locks are engaged, you can reverse the procedure to re-install the hinges into the door and re-install the door.

Good luck!!

The hinges are commercially avaialble from Applianceparts.com

Door hinge closed after removing door

We have Dacor wall mount oven. We have had problems with the hinges. The door will not close completely. We actually now can see the light through the side when the door is closed. The repair person told us that someone must have pushed the door in too far or hung on the doors and the hinges are bent and that we need to replace the hinges, which sounds expensive. Is there another suggestion?
