Question about Royal Sovereign Portable Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Heat exhaust duct length

I have a Royal Sovereign portable a/c unit. The ducting for heat exhaust is appx 3ft. What is the maximum length I can use for that purpose.

I no longer have the mfgr's instructions.
I need to know if I can increase the length of ducting that takes the hot air, from the room being cooled, to the outside, normally via a window. The a/c unit comes with ducting appx 3ft long. Would I be able to increase this hot air venting length to 25 ft without causing a hazard?

It should tell you in the manufacturer's instructions.

I'm not sure what the limitation would be, but it probably has one. Too much length and you will start restricting the air flow across the coil.

Dryer Ducting Installation Advice

Here's some useful guidance for installing dryer ducting. Improperly installed ducting can cause the following:

GAS DRYERS - Rapid burn cycling and improper drying results.
ELECTRIC DRYERS - Premature Heating Element failures.

IMPORTANT! NEVER terminate ducting in a chimney, under an enclosed crawl space or attic, and never common a dryer duct with a kitchen exhaust.

The total length of ducting and number of turns should be kept to a minimum. Semi-rigid metal type ducting is strongly recommended as it is more durable and resists collapsing.

If connecting sections of ducting, all joints should be tight to avoid leaks. The male end of each section must point AWAY from the dryer to prevent lint from accumulating at each junction. Ductwork should NOT be assembled with screws or fasteners that extend INTO the duct as this also will create points where lint will become snagged and accumulate. Wrap overlapping sections of ducting with duct tape.

A screen should NEVER be installed over the exhaust duct termination. The preferred termination is a dampered wall cap having a 4 inch opening. It must be installed a minimum of 12 inches above the ground.

Maximum Length of Metal Duct:

# of 90 degree elbows:

4" Semi-Rigid 4" Flexible
0 - 58 ft 28 ft
1 - 48 ft 23 ft
2 - 38 ft 19 ft
3 - 29 ft 17 ft
4 - 21 ft 15 ft

NOTE: It is recommended that you inspect your dryer ducting periodically to ensure you have no lint build up. Excessive lint can present a fire hazard.

My royal sovereign is spitting water out of exhaust

The problem you're having indicates that the may be to much downward droop in the exhaust hose and it's trapping water inside. It also may have an obstruction in it. Also, check the air intake filter and clean if necessary.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

We do not have a window in the room this need to be installed in. Does the window installation kit allow us to install the pipe that goes outside through our exterior wall of the house? Like a dryer vent...

I think you probably could. As most manufacturers of portable AC units allow for this. It's what called a semi -permanent installation . The dryer duct idea will work if the shaft part of the dryer duct is the same diameter as the window mount duct and the shaft of the dryer duct is long enough to go thru the wall and leave enough for the AC Exhaust Duct to hook to. Be sure that the flap door of the dryer duct moves freely and will not get stuck in the closed position. That could be a big problem if it does.
Keep in mind, you will not be able to add any length the AC duct hose. It must remain the same.

Hope this helped answer your question and things for choosing FixYa.

Down draft kitchen cooktop: i can't use a recommended 6" exhaust because of structural conflicts, but could use a 3". Will this mess anything up with the blower on the cook top?

This would be a bad idea. The problem would be that not all of the exhaust gases will leave the kitchen. (Thus it could make you ill or be fatal - it will not do be a problem for the blower.) For a very short run you can use 5" duct but not after any sections of 6" or 3 1/4" x 10" rectangular ducting. The maximum duct length can be 100'; however 5" round duct has a higher equivalence length than 6" round duct.

You would be better off putting the cooktop on an exterior wall and directly venting it to the outside with rectangular ducting.

The installation and owner's manual are available from GE. Go to http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/. Then search for JP389.

I wish that I had better news.

No heat/// blower works

First, check the duct work! The most common "no heat" problems with dryers are caused by duct work blockage. If your duct is blocked, it will overheat the unit, causing it to shut down the heat source (gas or electric, it doesn't matter). Most units will continue to "blow" without the heat. Remove the duct work, remove all lint from the duct and "exit" port of the unit. Then, check the wall duct, both inside and outside the house.
