Hi again.
I'm sorry your problem is still unsolved... Let me try providing some more assistance.

Few questions:

  1. Did you do a CLEAN install or tried to copy the setup from the old HDD?
  2. Are you using some kind of IBM's recovery option or installing from a normal Windows XP?
  3. If it's a clean install from a normal CD - DURING initial setup (with the blue background screen), can setup recognize the new HDD? Can you create/set/change partitions on it?
  4. In any case, do you manage to pass through ALL the setup process or the error occurs prior to its end?
  5. May you please write the error message word-by-word?
Waiting for your reply...

Best regards,

Ohhh OK... Now I got you!
It IS a missing AHCI SATA driver!

In order to provide you the OPTIMUM solution, I need to know if you put your hands on a USB floppy drive (and a floppy diskette, of course)...

Let me know so I could give you the best solution for you.

    Please IGNORE my last comment!
I did a further research on your case and it seems that your HDD is a PATA (also referred as IDE or ATA) drive, rather than a SATA drive, so the AHCI driver issue is irrelevant!

With that said, kindly do the following:

    • Shut down the computer and open the HDD slot/cover.

    • Carefully check that there are no twisted/bended pins where the HSS seats (on the laptop's end). If you find any that are - gently straighten them.

    • Reinsert the HDD and make sure it seats FIRMLY in its place.

    • Close/seal the HDD cover/slot.

    • Power up the computer and enter the BIOS (by pressing F2 - if I'm not mistaken).

    • Make sure the HDD is recognized and not disabled.

    • If you made any changes in the previous step, save changes (press F10) and quit.
If the drive WAS recognized by the BIOS, restart the setup process... Everything should work now!
If it WASN'T, I guess there's something wrong with the HDD connector/controller on the laptop's motherboard. In that case, the motherboard should be replaced.

    Good luck,

Bad connection from your hard drive to the laptops motherboard. page 63 tells you how to remove the hard drive - I would take it out, clean the connections with rubbing alchohol, and FIRMLY put it back and see if it will come up then.
