Lost start button and icons on my toshiba lap top

Do you mean the taskbar along the bottom of the screen?
If you move your cursor to the bottom of the screen the taskbar should appear. Right click anywhere on the taskbar and click properties. In the properties window, on the taskbar tab, uncheck 'auto hide taskbar'.

Cursor locks in middle of screen and unable to move it

One possible reason is that you might have locked your trackpad. HP along with many other laptops have a designated button that locks your touchpad so the cursor doesn't move on the screen.
Above your keypad there's a small little rectangular button. Try pressing it and it should unlock your trackpad.
Give this a shot, and I hope it works!

Asus notebook K501J Model. A blue wall at bottom of screen, about two inches high screen' .I cannot remove same. Also I cannot get the task at bottom of screen,

Try this:
Place your cursor at the top of the wide blue band. See if the cursor arrow changes to a 2-sided arrow. If if does, hold down the left button and move the cursor down until the screen is again normal.
Basically what you have done is to take part of the window and increase the size of the bar. This actually should be the taskbar, but it's way too large.

Have dv8000 hp recovery cd, default screen to large for laptop can't see instructions or questions need to adjust

Add an external monitor so you can see what is going on.

If you can't, then try this. Using your Alt-Tab keys, navigate to the window in question. Press Alt+SPACE, then M... now using your cursor keys you can move the active window around so you can move it into view, then press the Enter key to place it down, and you can continue (until you need to see the next screen).

Good luck
God Bless

Cursor won't stay where I move it with the mouse

Hi, your first problem (and possibly second problem) sounds like it's the "Insert" function on your keyboard. I've seen this a lot. Find the Insert key on your keyboard. It's normally off to the right side with the Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys. When you have the problem, press the Insert key and then keep typing. It should toggle between the cursor moving with typing, and not. If this was helpful, please rate my response. Thanks!

ADVENT KC550P Lap Top scren

the pc is standing at command prompt, which means it is unable to find the boot.ini file required to boot into windows

When you say you pressed F8 did you keep pressing it until you got a menu saying Safe Mode, last known good configuration, start in VGA mode etc, if so use last known good configuration and let it reboot.

If still nothing then you will need the windows cd to perform a system repair.
