Operating system for older laptop

I am putting another OS on a computer. I am installing a ISO OS that I got online but the CD i made was not big enough to hold the entire file and the computer can not boot USB. Is there a live disk that can use to install ISO as the main OS from a USB?

SOURCE: boot up with no operating system

When the system starts, hold the F10 key and go into BIOS and set CD Rom as 1st Boot device (in Boot Order). Because most Compaq's would put the BIOS in a hidden NON-DOS partition on the hard drive, you may have to get an OEM recovery disk for that model. Because there is no BIOS to go to, the machine doesn't know it has a CD, HD or Floppy to go to. A boot floppy/CD is no help. Alternative 1: With another desktop and IDE to Laptop HD connector, FDISK (make active partition and hidden partition [5mb]), Format both, copy the cabs from WinME CD to c:\windows\options. Alternative 2: Find the COMPAQ OEM CD for that model. Since there was no exact model number Click here Please indicate whether this is helpful or not.

SOURCE: HOW TO BOOT

If you have access to an external drive enclosure, OR you have a computer you can put the hard-drive from
that machine in temporarily, put the drive in one of them and copy the WIN98 directory to the harddrive.
Once the WIN98 directory is there, you can just install it from there. That is of course if the hard-drive has been
formatted with the /sys command, and set to primary boot drive using FDISK. As far as installing from floppy,..
the floppies haven't been on the market for a LONG time, and if you have them,.. I imagine they've seen better
days. If you HAVE to install from floppy though, use another computer, put in the CD, open the cd using windows
explorer. Once here, click on the WIN98 directory, and locate the files you need ( too many files and directories
to list here ) Seriously the best way would be to use an external drive enclosure ( since it's probably a 2.5" drive
size ) and just copy the whole directory to the drive and forget the floppy idea. It will take MUCH less time.

Enter BIOS Menu and look for Hard Disk SATA IDE setting of AHCI. Disable this by setting to Compatible mode.
XP does not support AHCI mode.
Please rate me if this works.

SOURCE: I am trying to install

I would first make sure that your laptop can actually handle the HDD's capacity, and the interface, then go into yout BIOS and make sure any switches that need to be hit are in fact set properly. First make sure that it is actually powering up. Regardless of what's going on, if the jumper settings are correct your motherboard should notify you that there is a proper conection in the bois display. If you don't see this, make sure that it is actually powering up, and that the jumper pin(s) are positioned correctly.

How to get my laptop reset to the original factory settings?

Go to the laptop maker's web site and look for a restore CD.
If you don't find one there, send them an email and explain your problem.
A Google search with the laptop make and model and the words "restore CD" might work.
Last resort is format the hard drive and re-install the Operating system.
Most laptops do not come with an OS cd, but the license key is on the bottom.
Here is a link to various Windows operating systems you can use with your CD key.

How to install xp in hp

Be aware if you install an operating system to a certain brand computer or laptop, you must have the drivers for that hardware.
If the factory never developed drivers for the OS version, you want to put in the computer, you can run in lots of trouble. Most of the time you can upgrade the OS. Downgrade is virtual impossible. No hardware firm, who ever sold a computer with a certain OS, will develop drivers for older operating systems.

Computer crash

One of the big problems with laptops is they come with the operating system repair on the reserve partition and you may not have a physical Windows Operating System CD/DVD disc to install the OS from scratch. Many times Dell allows for a back Up disc set to be made when the computer is first set up, you may not have done a back up set? Nevertheless; you can try to do a F8 when starting the computer. Select the REPAIR option and/or Safe Mode. Run your options. If that failed to work; you will have get a CD/DVD Operating System like Windows 7 or 8.1 and install the OS from scratch.

Under your laptop is a COA, (the code). Download the OS you use and that matches your COA from Microsoft. Use the ISO to install a fresh OS.

How do I upgrade from OS X 10.4.11 to 10.6 on my macbook?

Buy the OS Cd you want, put the new Cd in your CD player
Then Start the computer, and follow the directions, it should see that you have an older system and ask you if you are sure you want to change and or upgrade your operating system.
If it wants to reformat your system, shut it off and remove the CD.
Then backup all your data, and repeat the install.

Need installation cd lost original

You can usually find copies of your OS by doing a simple search on Google. Just make sure that if you search, search like this:

"Windows Vista Business 64-bit .iso"

The key is to have the OS Version correct and typing .iso at the end. You are bound to come up on a site to download a copy of it somewhere. You can usually just use the key that's on the bottom of your laptop or side of your computer to install it.

Once you download the ISO file. You can download ImgBurn. It's a freeware program to burn ISOs onto a CD/DVD.

I've encountered this problem many times and unfortunately you are looking at one of two issues. (ruling out that you're using a corrupted OS disk by burning another and checking for surface scratches) You could either have a faulty cd drive which can be tested by plugging in an external cd drive purchasable for under 50 bucks...using a different cd drive cleared up this exact problem more than 90% of the time in the past. Unfortunately, older slower computers have a big track record of this happening especially when reading DVDs
