there are no signs of any bad caps. Could it be the thermastat or anything.

ok I hear the ballast start up and then a whining noise. not sure if its the ballast board or the color wheel. the tv was on for a minute just now and turned off. the whining noise starts when the tv turns on and when the tv turns off the whining noise goes away.

any ideas. the whining is very quite not loud at all. it sounds like its coming from the ballast board or is that just an echo. the color wheel spins fine and doesn't stop at all

As someone else suggested to you the color wheel if original is the most likely reason for this.

This has a small electric motor and spins at about 14,000 rpm. A typical failure of this part will be a high pitched sound or a fan like noise---the wheel faces the lamp and is close enough to the ballast for the sound to be difficult to pinpoint.

Problems where a set shuts down after some period of time can be hard to isolate but the description suggests it is the color wheel------it is plugged and connected to the sets light engine which will instantly detect if it slows down below a certain speed or even stops.

If the picture looks normal when it is on and the lamp is known to be good BUT hear the whine or fan like noise the color wheel is suspect.

I can look and get you a part number and cost etc and You Tube has actual video instructions for replacing them in most of the Samsung sets.

Let me know if you have questions--I am here to help and have changed a lot of these color wheels in this type and brand of set.

YES, I have replaced more bad color wheels than lamps but the lamp is very easy to replace and not all people wish to attempt the color wheel If you replace it I have two tips when you do it to avoid common mistakes that the instructions on the web do not tell you about.

Aside from being careful when you replace it there are two common mistakes to avoid.

    1) The color wheel has two plugs that connect it to the DMD assembly which is part of the light engine; one is a small plug with a few wires but you have to be very careful removing it not to break the wires off and get it and the plug out. The second cable is a flat ribbon cable and only has contacts on ONE side and it is easy to plug it in backwards; most of these sets the contacts are facing the rear of the set and you need to be careful to get it back in correctly.

    2) Some but not all these sets after replacing the wheel the set will operate but the color look odd with a blue or other hue in the color----if this happens you will need to locate a small jumper on the DMD which is the metal box attached to back of the light engine and remove it (is small and pulls out).

I have seen people who made one or more of these mistakes come to this site for help.

I learned about the flat ribbon cable the first time I replaced one by getting it in backwards and of course the set detected the wheel was not connected and shut down.

Ebay if you are in a rush often has people selling this part and just search by the part number.

You may have a bad power supply and lamp ballast (most cases, the power supply damaged the ballast). You will need to take the back cover off the TV and inspect the ballast, specifically the capacitor on the ballast. The lamp is powered by this board, so it will be near by, just follow the red wires. A picture is provided below:

My tv turns off by itself. it doesn't reset just - dca6c08.jpg
If the capacitor is swollen on top, this is a clear indicator of failure. If you only replace the ballast and not the power supply (SMPS) the problem will reoccur fairly quickly... usually within a few days the ballast will be damaged again. If you want to reduce your repair costs, you could replaced the power supply and the 47uF, 450v capacitor on the ballast.

Let me know what you find.

Use the white and blue wire that connects to the lamp door switch, to trip the switch... that is, wrap it around it so the switch is held upward (closed). Listen to the TV while it is ON, does it sound abnormal. We need to make sure your color wheel is not the cause. The sound of it can be scratchy or shrill like when they are failing.

Sorry for the delay on this post. If you have the lamp door off, and have wrapped the white and blue wire around the lamp door switch so that the TV can power up without shutting down in protection mode... run it for a while. See if the TV is shutting down. There are a few Samsung modes that are very picky with the way you install the lamp door. If you install it incorrectly, after a time, the warmth of the lamp will cause the TV to expand slightly and the lamp cover shifts just enough to disengage the lamp door switch, causing the TV to shut down. If this is the case, you must install the lamp in a swinging motion... as if the bottom of the door were hinged, and swing the door inward from the top. This will engage the lamp switch in downward position. Let me know.

Hello.. meseta809

first off all it's not necessary to have the TV on to reset it. the problem is the dmd need to send the info that you have a working lamp.

try this to see if it work's

Panasonic TY-LA1000 TV Lamp Reset Procedure/instructions:
Ok, so apparently there are a couple of different ways forum members have found out how to reset their Panasonic Lamp timer (this should apply to all of them, not just the TY-LA1000 specific lamp)

“Hold the VOL down button on the TV and the SPLIT button on the REMOTE for five seconds”

Again, you will need to press the Volume button on the TV while pressing hte SPLIT button on the Remote Control for five seconds, it will NOT work if you try to do it both from your remote!

One must be very careful of the quality of the replacement lamp. Many of the cheap 'deals' on the web for replacement lamps are substandard. I always recommend that replacement bulbs be the original manufacturers bulb.

the problem may be due to dry soldering in the power supply stage if it was with the lamp there would be red or green light showing the presence of the power to the tv after making it own some of the components get hot and it will make the the soldering point conectionless and after some time the heat sink get cooled and the soldering point gets connected and u will see the picture again it is a simple problem if u have a soldering iron u make it hot and re solder all the components in the first part of the circuit board and the problem if rectified
