Ok that is a better description. If you matched rpms you would probably get it into gear. The grinding is because the synchronizer is broken or wore
out.

Tranny works, shifter wont shift the gears. how to fix?

My 2005 Polaris ATP 500 requires I depress the right foot brake while shifting into reverse or down into low range. Perhaps some adjustment on the foot brake to make this work. Also check linkage to make sure it is not binding. Others say if the idle speed is too high, you may not be able to shift. Try shifting with the engine off to see if it goes into the gears, using the foot brake. If yes, try again while at low idle speed.

What is it when in reverse the automatic transmission on a 1999 Camaro grinds?

Reverse is not "synchronized" forward gears are, so it does make some noise, try shifting to 2nd before engaging reverse to slow gear rotation and limit gear clash or grind.

try dissconnecting the reverse linkage from the shifter and then manually by sliding just the rod see if it goes into reverse if it does adjust your linkage if not it may be your shift fork or reverse gear

I have a 1997 Polaris 250 trail blazer. It is an automatice and it will not go forward. It will go into reverse and drive backwards but when you try to put it into forward it doesnt really feel like it...

The problem is a worn shift fork in the transmission. Replace the forks and check forward gear pinions and forward shift dog pinions for wear and replace if they show any signs of wear.

Mercury 115 problems

This could me that reverse gear is not fully engaged.Adjustment on the cables is needed.Take the cowlings off. With the motor not running, move the throttle/gear selector into forward and reverse. You will see where the cables move in the engine area.Note which way the cable moves the selector when reverse is selected.Do this next bit from inside the boat.Hook up the flusher to the motor and start it.Select reverse. When you hear the grinding, push the selector by hand in the direction of travel. It should engage the gear fully. You will see the adjustment threads on the control cables.Move to suit.Hope this helps

I would inspect the shifter linkage and maybe check the belt for damage.A little wd40 might help.

Reverse issues

i believe that your reverse gear is a kit. Now they are not gear driven, they actually run the motor in reverse to back you up, anyways, if you look down from your reverse lever, you will see a adjuster nut or guide bolt. try adjusting that some. you definitely don't want to keep grinding those gears!! reverse kits are around 500 bucks. Good luck
