Enable / Disable an Enterprise Laptop's Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, is networking technology that allows you to connect to the Internet. If you have a wireless-enabled Latitude computer you can connect to the Internet when in range of an access point called a hotspot.
When not in use your Latitude's wireless card should be disabled. By disabling Wi-Fi, you will receive two benefits:
Start-up times will be much faster.
If the wireless card is ON and you are out of the office (not connected to your normal, wired connection), the laptop will try to use the Wi-Fi network during the login process to run the various start-up scripts, etc. It will eventually time-out (fail). By having the wireless card turned OFF, the start-up process will be much faster.
Computer will not continually search for a wireless network (and waste battery life).
If you are in the office (connected to your normal, wired connection) or in a location where there is no wireless hotspot, you don't need to have the computer waste processing power by looking and looking for a wireless hotspot. By disabling Wi-Fi, you will gain a little more power for your other tasks. In addition, you will maximize your battery operating time by disabling wireless activity.
NOTE: After your Latitude has started up completely, you can ENABLE the wireless card and connect to a wireless hotspot. For example, a wireless router at your home or at a local coffee shop. If you have connected to this hotspot previously, the wireless card should connect automatically for you.
NOTE: Once you have the wireless card enabled, before you shut down the computer, you should again DISABLE the card. The computer will then be ready for the next time you turn it on with wireless turned off.
Enable / Disable with Hardware Switch
The more recent Latitude models have a wireless switch to enable or disable wireless network devices and the
Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator.
Dell Latitude E6420 and E6520 Series
These laptops have a small switch on the RIGHT side of the keyboard. The switch is toward the front of the laptop. The Wi-Fi Catcher™ icon will is above the keyboard. You will see a lit radio tower if the wireless switch is enable

Unable to connect laptop to internet

Do you have wireless in the house? If not that's your problem.

If you look at the bottom right near the time you will see a little staircase that represents the wireless. if you click on it and select the option to Connect to A Network a window will open up showing you all the wireless networks within range. You want to select your network (the one in your house) and click Connect. If it requires a password or key, then provide it. That's all there is to it.

If you don't see the staircase at the bottom right near the time, more than likely you don't have the wireless turned on. Look on both sides of the laptop and at the front for a switch that controls the wireless.

I am having trouble connecting to the internet because my WLAN has been turned off, how do I turn my wireless back on?

From the HP website:

The power to the wireless network and bluetooth devices is controlled by a switch or button on most computers. It is possible to accidentally bump the button and turn off the wireless service. c02230159.jpg On most computers, there is an LED light that glows blue when the wireless device is turned on and enabled, and glows orange when off or disabled. Some newer models use different a different color scheme. To turn on and enable the wireless device, do the following:
  1. To turn on the wireless device, simply move the switch to the on position. On some computers, the switch is actually a touch point on the panel above the keyboard.
  2. To enable the wireless device, right-click the HP Wireless Assistant (disabled) icon c02228164.gif and select Open Wireless Assistant . Click Turn On . The HP Wireless Assistant (enabled) icon c02228163.gif will display.

Will not connect to the internet. It just started this. It tells me there is no internet, when I try and fix the problem the computer tells me I need to turn on the wireless capabiltiy. It tells me it...

It's been a long time since I've seen this model, but with Acer's I remember the button generally being either near the power button (would be a button with an LED light behind it) or as a little switch on the front, lower side (basically under the touchpad)
The button itself will have an icon that looks like a radio tower with little' ) ) )' coming off of it in in different sizes. If you don't see it, look at the F keys for the same symbol, then use the Fn button and press that key. I know you said you looked everywhere but hopefully this helps.
Sometimes there is a software switch also that will allow you to turn on / off the wireless, verify that when you try and connect to a wireless it doesn't ask if you want the computer to flip the switch for you.

Can't find the button to connect and disconnect the wireless internet connection on our HP laptop: Pavilion dv7-3065dx. Somehow it got turned off and we don't have our manual with us.

Your wireless command switch is not a physical switch. It should be one of the touch sensitive contacts on the media control bar (right above the keyboard). It should look like a little straight up line with comas coming from the top (the idea being a tower sending out radio waves). You should just be able to touch it with the pad of your finger and activate the wireless which will then light up blue like the other "non" buttons.

Lost signal on acer aspire 6530 lap top, dont know if my daughter has pressed a wrong button or switch ?

There is a little satellite icon next to the always blue (when turned on) skip to next (song) and stop (square) touch buttons. Put your finger on the satellite icon for a few seconds, then move off, a green message should come up on the bottom of your screen saying "Wireless LAN enabled", if it says "Wireless LAN disabled" then there is another problem with your connection.
When the wireless is enabled check that you're connected to the wireless network. Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center (in Vista) you should be able to see:
"Access Local and Internet"

If it's not connected to the internet try resetting your wireless router, if that doesn't work, check you have the correct network password. Right click the two little PC screens (icon) in the bottom left, in the new window right-click your network and go to properties. In the new window, "Security" tab check the settings and type in the correct network security key (password) again. Hopefully you will have a record fo the network security key or your problem will have already been fixed before you get to this point. :)

Acer Aspire 6930 wireless on off switch

The wireless card has dropped the IP address, to get the wireless router to issue the wireless card with a new IP address, right click on the wireless connection (the one with the red X) and left click on Repair.
When the red X disappears then you can connect to the Internet.
