If you look inside b/w the drum to the front wall you see on the bottom a gap.
this gap come from ware and taire of the seal felt. and the clothes get stuck there. you need a new upper felt (its like special sponge or fabric)
as a technitian i change thus every 4-5 years b/c they just ware down .
the felt is the sponge that the drum ride on ,in the front wall of your dryer

SOURCE: Rusty Drum!

Hello,
I have the same problem. My dryer was purchased at Sears in Ottawa and the replacement cost for the part required is $137.99 but turns out it is covered by a manufacturer's warranty for 15 years but does not cover labour. I am going ahead with the repair since it's better than spending time removing rust stains from your clothes.

Hope this helps....Good Luck

The front tub support needs to be replaced. It is a felt seal the tub rides on and is getting worn, and the sheets are getting between the drum and seal. no the dryer does not need to be replaced.

SOURCE: clothing coming out stained with rust colored marks-purchased dryer in 2001

The felt needs to be replaced around the drum. When it wears out, this will cause these marks. The felt is the seal that allows the drum to rotate around the door.

SOURCE: brown stains in the drum of my whirlpool dryer

Apparently a common problem with 4-5 year old Kenmore and Whirlpool dryers. The paint is rubbed off the back panel by the felt seal attached to the rotating drum. The bare metal gets rusty from the damp clothes. The rust is rubbed off by the felt seal. The entire felt seal will turn brown. The stains are transfered to the clothes. The rust stains can generally be removed by additional cleaning.
I'm going to replace the felt seal on the drum, clean the rust off the back panel and see how long it lasts. Seal w/ adhesive is $30-40.
Some have suggested painting the back panel, but i don't think fresh paint is going to last long. The original paint was probably electrostatically applied and maybe baked on.

My dryer is ten years old. A few months ago, some of the clothes would come out with rust stains on them. Some of the clothes would get caught in the seams which would cause staining, tearing and...

I would suggest replacing the front drum bearing. Sounds like the gap is now excessive, obviously allowing clothes to get caught up in there. Drum must be removed from the dryer to do this.
Good luck, hope this helps.

Clothes dryer

It could be rust stains coming from the tub of the dryer during the drying cycle. The only concern is that rust stains are usually brown streaks on the clothes. I'd check the to make sure there are no rust stains on the tub, check the seal of the door to make sure its still in good condition. The last possibilty could be a good cleaning of the dryer (removing lint from the lint screen compartment and the tub of the dryer).

A schematic of your dryer can be found on www3.sears.com and should show how to get into your lint screen compartment and your tub.
