  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston.
• I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it).
• Make certain the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  1. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
If you have more questions or need additional help please reply below and I will get back to you. HTH & Good Luck.

Clutch removal on a580-531060 craft an chainsaw

Assuming you want to remove the clutch spider, which typically is left-hand threaded onto the crank. Not knowing if it's an internal (chain drive sprocket is "outboard") or external clutch, here goes for both. After removing bar & chain.
Internal: CAREFULLY (so it doesn't fly) remove clip from crank, remove washer, clutch drum, bearing and/or rim sprocket. Remove recoil starter. Using proper tool to fit clutch "spider" and impact wrench, turn it CLOCKWISE with wrench to unthread it.
External: Remove bar & chain and recoil starter. Using tool to fit the clutch "spider" and socket on impact wrench, spin the spider off CLOCKWISE. You can then remove remainder of clutch & bearing.
Be sure to grease the bearing while it's accessible.
Starter removal avoids applying any load if the crank turns.

Chainsaw runs fine but the blade slows down to stop when i cut

too much load (too large a cut), dull chain, no lubrication oil on chain, slipping clutch.. lots of reasons.. need more information and you need to check all the points I mentioned. The clutch is RPM dependant- once the RPM drops- the clutch will start to slip. Look for oil or grease on clutch shoes also

Stairmaster left pedal clanks

The "clunking" you are describing is more than likely caused by either a faulty left drive sprocket, the drive shaft or a combination of both. The drive sprockets are equipped with a needle bearing type clutch. When they fail, the clutch does not grab the shaft and drive it correctly. You may just need to replace the left drive sprocket. In some cases you will need to replace the sprocket and the drive shaft.

50to 60 compression on a husqavarna 455 rancher chain saw. Ring job and how hard?

455 is an X Torq engine, this means it runs very cool on the inlet side of the piston, they are quite prone to gumming the ring in if they have been used on a heavy two stroke mix, due to the designit is a full machine strip down to get to the piston, skilled man 3 hours to strip and rebuild.

How do I get the clutch drum off? Husky 55 Rancher

A YouTube video shows the procedure using a Husqvarna 350 here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdqkIuVNUQc
1. I looked at IPLs for the 55 & 455 and didn't see any special tools.
2. A length of starter cord or nylon rope may be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and be cut when the piston rises.
3. It is probably a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
Let us know how it worked for you. GL
Lou
It appears the 455 must be a "spur" type chain drive sprocket. the 55 offers the option of a "rim and spline" drive sprocket. If replacing the clutch drum I recommend the "rim and spline".
