The graphics went crappy then it light up red around the on and off button

You have the red ring of death.

Your xbox isn't getting enough power or the xbox is overheating...

There was a design issue with the older xbox's that caused them to overheat.

If you can return it or exchange it it would recommend doing that.

If not, I used this method to get mine working:

It was a weekend project. My xbox worked for a short time after then died again.

Flashing red light around the power button

Its the Red Ring of Death. It can be fixed but extremly complicated and I definatly dont recommend attemoting it but will provide a link of a video that shows you how WARNING you need special tools to take the 360 aprt. Microsoft had started to warrenty against this problem for more than a year have heard up to 3 years but have never verified it.
I have included Microsoft Xbox customer support link and thats what I suggest

Solving Your Red Light Flashing:

1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run "Initial Setup" under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.

When i turn my xbox 360 on it starts running hard then the controller lights on the device start flashing red.

Four lights around the power button flash red on your Xbox 360 console. Four flashing lights indicates that the console does not detect an audio/video (AV) cable.
Note Four flashing red lights will not appear on consoles that have both an AV port and an HDMI port.
