Problems setting up 2 wire router

Hi, I have just purchased a 2wire 2700 hg-b router. I set it up via the 2wire home portal set up wizard and am now able to access tiscali broadband using the the ethernet connection but i am only able to get a wireless connection at certain times and then only for a brief moment before it drops off.It may be connected to the fact that i had to set up the tiscali internet connection with the router manually as the router can`t locate the ip address automatically so as per an earlier solution on this site i changed the settings of VCI to 38, VP to 10,Encap mode to VCmux and switched to ppoa.there was a pop up at the end of the set up wizard which advised `unable to connect to configuration server` but it appears to have worked as i can connect to the internet using the ethernet.i am running windows vista and this has advised that the wireless internet connection is limited and that the settings on the router may not match those on the computer. Any advice as to how to obtain full wireless access to internet would be much appreciated....Thanks.

Well, go to homeportal/management, type the system password, and on that page you will see the management and diagnostic console of your 2wire modem. there you can make the changes for the wireless channels of the modem. under local network, click on wireless, maximize wireless channels to 11 and set the power settings to 10, then make sure SSID is enabled, WEP is set to default encryption & WEP-open, then click on the submit button on the upper or lower right corner of the screen. then click on statistics, make sure wireless is able to transmit / receive wireless packets. then try to connect to your 2wire network, the SSID is actually 2wirexxx (xxx stands for the last 3 nos. of the serial no.) if it asks for the security key or passphrase for the security enabled network, type the nos. enclosed in brackets found at the barcode sticker just below the serial no. (SN). check if you are able to connect with full access, of course the 2wire modem must be connected using ethernet cable to access the MDC.

Ok, if you can log into the router at all, you should be able to go to home network, and halfway down will be the wireless configuration.

assuming it's set to default wireless security, there should be a network key writtten on a sticker on the bottom of the router:  You'll need to enter that code in windows vista before it will allow you to connect wirelessly.

2 wire

I experienced this same problem on a friend's AT&T 2WIRE 2701HG-B router. The primary computer used WinXP,sp3; I added a laptop, WinXP,sp3 and a Macbook Pro w/ Leo OS v11, successfully.

How to resolve the issue (rather, how I resolved this issue):

From the desktop computer, connected to 2WIRE:

1) Open a browser and type or This site will automatically detect your settings and provide the necessary info., required to set up your wireless network.

NOTE: NTWK information/settings for THIS router can NOT be retrieved via traditional methods. Ignore all other information that assigns a name to your network and/or password. Follow only this wizard, for success in setting up your wireless connection.

2) Verify that your Firewall and System settings are correct and up-to-date. If not, update your software by pressing the link on the right.

3) Click the Home Networking tab (at top of page):

Locate @ the right of your screen, "Status at a Glance".
Under "Home Network", verify:
"Ethernet = x"; (where x = $1)
"Wireless = 0" (ZERO IS OKAY!)

("Zero" will change to "1, 2, 3, etc.," upon successful connection of ea. new wireless device(s) added to the NTWK).

* Once a new wireless device is initially and successfully connected to the NTWK, the LCD wireless indicator of the router will illuminate green.

4) Under "Wireless Settings":

NOTE, the network name. This is the name (of Network) that you will use to connect your wireless device(s).

The default password is the 10-digit number [in brackets] displayed on the sticker, located on the bottom of the router (directly above the UPC code, below the SN).

5) Click "Edit Settings":

In the DEVICE YOU ARE ADDING, click or type in the name of NTWK, as stated under "Wireless Settings". Next, type in the 64-bit WEP password (10-digit number displayed on the sticker, located on the bottom of the 2WIRE router).

6) Click "Verify your Home Network".

Verify the wireless device you added is displayed and has been added to the NTWK.
The Ethernet setting should still remain = 1 (or however many devices are connected to the INET via wire) and Wireless should = 1 (or more, if +1 device has been added).
NOW, the wireless LED shall be glowing the same pretty green, as all the other indicators on the router! You are now connected. Congratulations!

RE: My posted. Connecting DSL/Router to DIR-628 internet router

Installing a router to work as the second one on a home networkrequires special configuration. Do the following on the second routerto ensure it (and the devices attached) function properly:1. Connect as local device or bridge - If connecting the second router via Ethernet cable, plug it into one of the LAN ports on the first router. If connecting the second router wirelessly, ensure the second router is set for client mode.Note that some home wireless routers do not support client mode; thesemust be connected by cable. Check your router documentation for detailson its client mode configuration support.

2. Check / change IP address - Most home network routers use a default IP addresssetting. Often, these default IP addresses will not work in a tworouter environment. Check the second router's IP address value andreset it if necessary to work within the valid address range of thefirst router (and to not conflict with any other device on the network).

3. Disable DHCP- To avoid IP address conflicts between all of the devices on the homenetwork, only one of your two routers should assign addresses via DHCP. All mainstream routers provide an option to disable DHCP as part of the router's configuration screens.

(My netgear router supports client mode. The 2wire supports bridged and router mode. My 2wire is the main router. I set up my netgear using my laptop. Once you change the address on the router.. You will only be able to directly access through the main router to the 2701.)

Configure your 2701 IP address to a static address in the range and diable DHCP. Only 1 router can run the DHCP service. To disable Dhcp on the 2701.... log on to 2701> click on home network>advanced settings>uncheck enable DHCP>Next section is Public routed subinterface...Check enable and Aout Firewall Open>Input your main router address and mask>save config..

This worked with the Netgear router.. May not with your router. Good Luck! Hope this helps!

Cannot setup home wireless network between computers

Since all computers are online, you do not need to change any setting on the router for the computers to share file or resources.

If you are using Windows XP - try this link:

For Vista:

I hope that helps!

Good luck and have a nice say!

2 wire 2700 hg-b

The 2Wire 2700 is a residential gateway, a modem and router in-one. There is an RJ-11 jack in the back of the gateway and this is where your dsl phone cord plugs in. There are four RJ-45 jacks in the back for connecting devices using ethernet cable. As a router is can operate both wirelessly and wired. For wireless operation you'll need the WEP key which is located on the tag on the bottom of the gateway. It's the number enclosed in brackets, between the two bar codes.

XP is an very good OS which will connect with 2wire without any problem.

If your computer is not able to detect modem, pls follow these steps.

* Check for damage of ethernet cable
* Try to reset the modem by using a paper clip punching into the reset button
* Even if your modem is not detected, force the IP and Default gateway

Take care

Can a 1800HG gateway in my garage/workshop link *wirelessly* to my 2wire 2700 HG-B wifi AP internet in the house?

try going onto on the computer connected to the 1800hg and set the router onto bridge mode (deselect enable routing). You might be able to set the two routers to connect then from here: or somewhere else in the MDC, not sure if it will work as I haven't tried it, but I hope it helps.
