There are a set of "agitating dogs" under the agitator. These are like small fingers with grooves that grab the agitator and agitate the clothes. These can be replaced for about $5. They are usually made of plastic and wear over time or from overloading. Search the internet for agitating dogs and how to replace.

After final spin all the clothes end up in a big pile. the washer has never done this before. please help.

Sounds like the agitator is not working (the post in the middle that oscillates opposite the basket while in the "wash" cycle). You'd have to take the back or bottom off the washer (after unplugging it!) and check the motor and belts/pulleys that go to the agitator.

LSQ9600JQO top load washer agitator top doesn't rotate during cycle, bottom part works fine

Remove the top cover and you will see a 3/4 inch square hole in the top. Use a 3/4 rachet and extention to remove the nut (right hand threads) The you can replace the dogs as seen in this video of an older model

Brand new agitator does not rotate. I realized that I did not buy a new "seal-cap" that goes between the agitator and the cap. Would the missing cap cause the agitator to fail to rotate? GE spacesaver...

by 'rotate' do you mean that it will not turn at all or that it turns in both directions and does not 'rachet', turning in one direction only and agitating the clothes? If it rotates freely in both directions, it's probably your agitator dogs not engaging either due to improper assembly or breakage.

The agitator will not turn

please be more specific. Do you mean that the drum turns but the agitator in the center does not trun at all? Does it turn freely by hand in both directions? Does it not 'rachet' as the drum cycles? The problem may likely be the agitator dogs. These little plastic pieces are found by taking the agitator apart (cap, holding bolt, catch burrs, etc). They are designed to allow the agitator to rotate in one direction only, thus forcing your clothes in a downward spiral in the center of the washer. The parts are fairly inexpensive ( a couple of dollars) if ordered online. The hard part is getting to them.

Agitator making clicking noise when washing clothes; clothes wrapping around agitator

Hi,
If this a whirlpool brand washer, there are sone parts bad in the agitator it's self. These parts are called dogs and they make the agitator rachet so that the top half only goes one direction. Does this sound like what you are experiencing? If so, let me know and I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

Maytag MAV7000 AWW washing machine agitator won't spin freely.

When you grab the fabric dispenser and move the agitator "counter "clockwise you should hear the rachet noise, once you try and move it back "clockwise" the fabric dispenser should slide inside the agitator and the agitator should NOT move.

Mixing center spindle won't aggitate

Your agitator dogs are worn out.
Remove the agitator and replace the 4 little rubber dogs.
Snap the top off. Remove the bolt inside. Pull up on the top part and access the dogs.

Agitator spins in one direction

The purpose of the upper portion of the agitator is to push the clothes in a downward motion. As the agitator moves the dogs grab and on the backward srtroke the top portion rotates a quarter turn. In the spin mose the agitator only goes in one direction or your clothes would be torn to shreads. As the washer rotates back and forth, the dogs grab the inner walls of the upper agitator and that forces the clothes into a downward movement to the bottom of the tub. These dogs will wear out. To test whether or not these are bad just grab the agitator while in wash mode. The dogs should advance the top portion easily. If not then they are worn out. To replace them you must remove the agitator and sit it on the floor. Hold the base down with your feet and yank the top upwards. After seperating the 2 pieces you simply install the new dogs and line up the bottom with the top being careful not to break the little tabs on the bottom agitator that hold the top in place.

Top Agitator is not moving

This washer has a set of cheap plastic dogs that grab the inside wall of the upper agitator to move the clothes downward and help them get a better cleaning. The older style These dogs will wear out. The newer style you simply pop the cover of the agitator and use a 3/4 drive extention to unscrew the upper agitator. replace the dogs and put the top back on. Nothing could be easier.

sounds as if the transmission agitator pawl is slipping. inside the transmission is a gear connected to the agitator. there is a spring loaded pawl that rotates around the center and engages its pawl or hook into the agitator gear for each rotation. either the pawl hook is worn or the agitator gear is rounded off. the transmission must be opened up to see what is a miss
