More than likely your air filter is clogged and needs replacing. If that is the situation the carb needs air and is pulling suction on the crankcase breather tube siphoning up oil instead of just burning the vapors. If it was a busted ring the oil would be coming out the exhaust and burning blue smoke.

Why does yardworks 173cc bs engine will start, run, for 2-3 seconds then stop

Bad gas. Drain gas and refill with fresh gas with Stabil. Old oil. Drain oil fill with fresh 30w oil, 16-18oz. Clean air filter and spark plug.. Relpace air filter if dirty. Saving $$$ on this simple tune up is not intelligent.

Engine only runs with choke on. Blue smoke comes out and engine runs rough or not at all

sounds like you have a bad Ring on the Piston or a blown head possibly. Blue smoke means Oil is getting into the combustion chamber. Full choke means you have to give this 'broken' engine a lot of gas to compensate for it's problem.
Do you change the oil at least once a year? Filthy oil or a lack of oil will kill an engine

My mower is spitting oil all over the driveway and smoking. The pull cord will not pull

It is important not to over fill the sump with oil, only fill to the max mark on the dip stick, if you have tipped the mower up it may have pushed oil up the engine breather and into the air filter box, if the paper filter is now soaked in oil you will need to replace the filter.

I recently changed the blade on my 22" Yard Machine push mower. It is a 22" blade. A bunch of oil spilled out of it when i turned it upside down and it was replaced. Now the chord on my mower is...

it will be o.k. theres just some oil in the combustion chamber making it hard to compress the air, when it starts there will be a lot of white smoke, thats just the oil in the cylinder burning away/off then you will be o.k.just make sure its close to the full mark before you start it and after you shut it off and it has set a while to drain back to the oil pan

Blown engine

A dirty air filter will reduce the power produced by the engine, and eventually may make an engine stall, but it does not cause it to "burn oil". You have options, so just work your way through them: 1) manager/owner of the repair shop - will they stand behind their repair work? 2) the warranty and protection plan from Lowes. Go in with the right attitude - don't direct anger at the person you're talking to, just describe your issue and ask them what they would do in your situation? If you get turned down, politely ask to escalate the issue to their supervisor, etc. Good luck to you.

Where are the air and oil filters located

I don't think you have an oil filter on your push mower. You can go to www.buymtdonline.com and look under illustrated parts look up then enter your model number of your LAWN MOWER not your motor and it will give you a parts listing for mower and look under the sub categories for the engine and it will show you where the air filter is located and oil filter (IF ONE). Look at the little number by the air filter then scroll down to that number below the diagram and you will get the part number for the filter.

Hope this helps

The mower starts, buts runs sluggishly, and dies

Most common is a dirty air filter, followed by a plugged vent hole in the filler cap on the gas tank. Next would be fuel issues either in the supply line or in the carburetor.
Hope this helps, --W/D--
