I have the same problem im not sure if it is in warranty i took back a while ago because it started scratching my discs, does this mean my warranty is extended a year from when i took it back or will it of run out? I got it for christmas 2007 and it's over a year now so if I got an extended warranty from taking it back I should be able to take it back now, but if not it will be out of warranty.

How I worked around the "Open Tray" problem, where the game discs were not being recognized:

1. Open tray
2. Unplug power cable while tray is open
3. Plug in power cable
4. Power on console - tray closes
5. Open tray
6. Insert disc
7. Try your game

Good luck! Source: Someone else mentioned this in a forum somewhere, however I don't recall who it was or which forum. I'm just trying to get the word out so people don't send in their XBOX for repair, or open the case and void the warranty if this workaround resolves the problem.

Dude! i found a way that works, well for me , many of these problems have there own little quirks but, k i have the benQ disc drive which from my looking around are supposed to be less error prone than the samsung n hitachi versions, but so i took my xbox apart, voided my warrenty, really dumb, i know, but i didnt feel like waitin 2 months or how ever long microsoft would take so i popped that beast open n tried the rubber band trick and cleanin it with no luck, so i finally put my drive back together n ran the xbox opened up, while it was sayin reading i tapped on the top of the disc drive multiple times with a little bit of force, n i was expectin it to just say opn tray again but to my surprise it kept reading! no i shut off my xbox n tried this again n it works, so wow i guess microsoft products just need a kick in th a**, hope that helps sumone...

  • jayyy252 Dec 11, 2010

I agree with slapping the console a bit. I eventually get it going by doing that or slamming the tray shut really fast. But the next day it wud be same again, yet it worked all that day. Finally i decided it must be the heat that kept it working once u get it going. I now put it in my boiler press at night and so far it works every day. Its the cold that gets into it at night that brings it back to square one

  • steelerklyn Dec 17, 2010

Ok, i have had this OPEN TRAY ERROR but i found out how to fix it without opening the xbox360.

what happened to me is : i turn my xbox360 on WITH a cd in the xbox and it said ''open tray'' but i soon found out that if you turn the xbox on with a cd ALREADY inside it will show the ''open tray'' what you do is make sure when you turn your xbox on there is no cd inside in the first place
if there is a cd inside simply turn xbox on take cd out turn xbox off then turn it back on DO NOT OPEN THE TRAY UNTIL IT HAS REACHED THE DASHBOARD !!! when it comes to dashboard put cd in then it should work it works for me.

The inner ring on the dvd contains a decoding boot record just below where it says xbox in hologram on the dvd. Clean this inner circle below the xbox hologram so it will match up with the tag calculation and start up the .xbe file. ;)

I cleaned the lens with alcohol and tested it and it worked, woot! However, when i put it all back together, it didn't work again, -very frustrated-. Then i tried hitting the thing and got an E-error but i turned it off again and gave it another few hits and it was gone. Since that wasn't working I went back and took it apart AGAIN and noticed the screws were lose on the DVD drive. I tightened the screws real tight and bang, it worked. Hope this helps!!!!

I have had this error several times, and I have found 2 solutions. or come across 2 solutions rather. If you look up "Open Tray Error" you can find a video on YouTube detailing the cause of the "Open Tray Error" and a fix. So, before I talk about the cure, let me talk about the disease. The "Open Tray Error", theoretically, is caused when you have the disk drive open, and your xbox is turned off or the power source is removed. When your disk drive is open, the laser rides backwards on two rails out from under where the disc usually is in the closed position. However, when your xbox is turned off or the power source is removed, the laser does not reset. Now, if you are mechanically inclined you could follow the videos on how to disassemble your Xbox and fix your disk drive. I did this the first time I had this error, but after fidgeting with my xbox, I believe, I BELIEVE, that if you open your disk drive and turn off the xbox, after the drive closes by itself, turn the xbox back on, open the tray, and pull the power cord, then back in, and turn it on. I have tried the last method several times and it seems to work every time. Good Luck!

I had the same problem, except that my xbox wouldnt play anything- I always got the "Open Tray" error. It wouldn't play any discs- no CD's, DVDs or Games. Since I was already out of warranty, I figured it couldn't hurt to open it up. It took me about 15 minutes to get the xbox all opened up (using guides on the Internet). Once inside, all I did was blow the dust out. Then I took a moistened Q tip and gently rubbed the laser eye in the DVD drive a few times. Then I put it back together. Not sure what I did, but its been working perfectly again... I haven't had the Open Tray error in over a week... Maybe my laser was just gunked up.

"open tray " error solution that worked for me.
take out the game and turn the system off and unplug it.
Plug it back in and turn the system back on (with NO game in it). when you get to the main screen it will say "open tray". press A to open it up and put in your game, then press A again to close it. Our game loaded fine. good luck!!

Well actually all these "fixes" are not the problem. One day a friends console got the open tray error. after cleaning and all that i found that did absolutly nothing. after taking the entire drive apart i found that the laser / moter assembly was offset. this ment that the disk was tilted 1degree towards the laser and intern hittng the laser assembly that so many peopl think is "laser burn" which actualy is the disk physically hitting the laser. how u fix this is as easy as adjusting two screws were the moter and the laser/ tray assembly meat. now thses arnt nomal phillips, flat head or torx scews. i found that stickin a drill bit in the screw head annd turnin it with some pliers did the trick. this fixes the open tray error for good unless the disk is causing it. IF anyone gets open tray ocasionally this should stop it for good.

My Xbox 360 had this same problem, where it wouldn't play any game at all. So. I opened the disc tray and blew straight into the slot, similar to how you had to blow on game cartridges for old systems. It works fine now, and I didn't have to open it (and void the warranty) or send it to microsoft.

Open tray error is a very easy fix hardest part is splitting the xbox after you split it remove the cd rom 4 screws hold a case around the internals remove the case push the laser as far towards the middle as you can take a small phillips head screw driver and turn the little gold screw on the left back side of the laser about 1/4 turn not much put it back togher and your back in action might want to check to make sure it works before you put it back togher just make sure you remove the magnet from the top of the cdrom case and use it to lock the game in place or you might be buying a new game

Ya it was that last xboxlive update. Microsoft does this all the time: They send out an update that deliberately makes many xbox's malfunction. They make tons of money on new xbox's and reparis doing this.
I have same problem. Mine works by opening the drive and then closing it as soon as possible. I use the controller and just hit A twice in rapid succession. GIVE IT A TRY IT WORKS.

I found a solution that works for me after a long period of time with this problem.

Get an air spray canister (just compressed air), open your Xbox's game tray, take the disc out, then spray the air along the tray, moving side to side inside the Xbox. You may want to spray into the vents, too, just to be sure.

This worked for me, and it was the only thing that worked for me. I had already tried hitting the console with the controller (gently), and doing the stuff Microsoft recommends etc.

I had the same problem. i had first gone to play Fallout 3 when i first got this. Then i tried like 4 other of my games and i still couldnt get any of them to work. The BEST soultion is not buy a new drive or try tampering with ur harddrive. i just went to best buy and bought a laser lens cleaner cd. The problem was getting the xbox to read it. i just kept turning it on and for about times until it finally said play dvd and just run a clean and my problem was gone for good.

Hope this helps

Okay, your warranty is out. You have no cash, no friends to help, no video on youtube seems to help. Try this; since your gonna open the thing anyway.
Disassemble disc drive.
Remove gray disc tray and flip it over and check for trash on gear grooves. Also look for anything that could burred up, broken off. There is a tab on the gear assembly that shifts left & right for open and close positions of the tray. This gear travels down a path that
steps down to a closing and 'raising' the laser into the 'ready to run' position. Besides having weakened metal contact bars that need repositioning for better operation[on well used drives] this tab does not quite make it to the correct spot. Therefore not allowing the laser to be ready for reading a disc - Disc reading error.
I tried to superglue a piece of old credit card material in there but I haven't perfected this, yet. I replaced the tray with another one that was not damaged and it worked perfectly.
Clean lens with Q tip & alcohol as well as rails & corkscrew shaft. With closed tray make sure it slides smoothly.
Don't get in a hurry putting the drive back in the xbox. You could have it sitting incorrectly and still have the error. Be sure to spray clean the eject button on the circuit board thoroughly. Make sure your plastic eject lever is lined-up properly upon assembly. Or you'll be 'no better than a monkey' and 'bang on it' to get it working.

THIS SOLUTION DOES NOT REQUIRE OPENING THE Xbox 360
The open tray error is one of the more common in Xbox 360's. Before I tell you how to fix it I will tell you a common theory as to how this happened. If you don't want to read this skip to the next space in-between paragraphs. Now my theory. Inside the Xbox 360 there is a laser eye that moves up and down the disc to read it. Sometimes if you shut down the Xbox 360 while it is still playing a game the laser eye will be stuck on the very end of the disc and will not be able to read the disc. The only way to fix this problem is to get the laser eye back where it can read the disc.

I have tried every single way mentioned to fix my Xbox 360 (that hasn't required opening it) and this is the only one that I discovered that worked. First you must try to see if any of your discs take a few seconds longer to go from "Reading.." to "Open Tray" if you do find a disc that you own that does this then keep on having it "read" the disc (open and close the disc drive). After three to seven minutes the disc will change from "Reading.." to "Play game" and the game should start. The only games I have seen this work so far with are "Lost Planet" and "Assassin's Creed Brotherhood". Please comment if this also worked for you or if you have found any other games that this works with.

REALLY EASY AND IT WORKS

  • Get a Paperclip and bend it so it makes a hook
  • Stick it in your drive and pull the lens towards you
  • MAKE SURE THE XBOX IS OFF, to do so just pull the plug while the drive is open

IF there is a buybacks near you, you can take it there. They charge $3, but only if they get ALL the scratches out. If not it's free.

I tool my XBOX 360 apart and cleaned it. That didn't work, so I opened it back up and got to the laser part of it. There is a tiny screw holding a white guide on the little bar that the laser slides up and down on. I loosened that up a little and tightened it back down, but not as tight as before and now it works fine! seems the laser gets stuck because the screw is to tight.

Its a pretty easy fix guys. I have had the same problem and fixed it with no problem at all. Your lens is dirty on you disk drive and needs to be cleaned off. There is also a little trick that when you put the game in and close the tray you kind of hit or tap the top of your xbox above the disk drive while the system is reading your game. If you hit it in the right spot the system willl continue to load up the game like normal.
But the legit way to fix the problem is by opening up the console and pop out the cd drive which is quite simple all you have to do is pull out the wire in the back so that you can work on the drive.
Now unscrew the drive so that you can get to the lens and clean it off with a Q-tip and a tiny bit of alchohol. I just dipped a qtip in a little bit of it and the wiped the lens very lightly so that you dont screw up the alignment of the lens itself... Once your done with that maybe just wipe down the inside cover of the drive to help future dirt and close it all back up and your good to go.....

Yeh i have this problem too but my games work without doing anything really ok at first i got really annoyed and i kept opening and closeing it and after the first 100 times the game came on it annoys me because it starts to read longer then still says open tray then finally works anyway it got worser so i called my uncle round hes like a intense gamer so he told me it was getting over heated plus i read on the internet that theres a laser that can burn out and that will cause it anyways ive made it cooler and it work quicker but still had the open tray problem now i annoyed again because the problems back but longer than b4 just now i opened it like 1000 times and it works so JUST KEEP OPENING AND CLOSEING IT OK :)

All i did was open up the box, tooke the case off the dvd drive, cleaned the laser with rubbin alcohol which didnt fix anything but i figured it needed a cleaning anyway, and then adjusted the tightness of the dvd drives lid and kept testing discs until it read one, then successfully read it over and over again, while every now and then it still recognized it as a dvd isntead of a game, but the point is it worked. :D

Ok, so heres a cheap method of fixing this error. There is no opening of the xbox 360. You just get a canister of compressed air like what you use for a computer.
Now you have to open the disk tray and spray into the xbox. Also spray the vents. It'll read for longer then usual and then you have a working xbox

I only have atemporary solution for this problem
1. take apart xbox and vois warranty ( dont do this if u want to send it to MS.
2. move lens to the correct starting point, this is the cause of the open tray problem.
3. once u move the lens (its on parrallel runners) to the right starting point it will work but it is only temporary
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycuvX7x1HJk

then u have to put it back together

good luck this works but it is a pain to repetitively take the xbox apart and keep doin it

There are all kinds of gimicks and "scratch removers" or "resurfacers" that you can try. if any of them work is up to your level of patience and how much money you're willing to waste on it.

IMO it would be cheaper to buy a new copy of guitar hero than the effort and $$ to try and salvage a destroyed disc.

BTW, I heard clear nail polish works. ;)

SOURCE: when i put a game in my xbox 360 it says reading then open tray

I found a solution that works for me after a long period of time with this problem.

Get an air spray canister (just compressed air), open your Xbox's game tray, take the disc out, then spray the air along the tray, moving side to side inside the Xbox. You may want to spray into the vents, too, just to be sure.

This worked for me, and it was the only thing that worked for me. I had already tried hitting the console with the controller (gently), and doing the stuff Microsoft recommends etc.

If that doesn't work, you could try gently knocking the top of the Xbox with your conroller, when you put the disc in, as I've heard that works for some people.

Another thing that works for some people is taking the disc out, closing the tray, then when it goes to Open Tray, open the tray, put the disc back in and then closing the tray again.

XBOX 360 wireless guitar doesnt connect to system & dont know why

Power on your Xbox console and allow it to load to the Xbox dashboard.

Press the green Xbox controller on the guitar. All four lights surrounding the button should start flashing.

Press the connect button on your Xbox console (It's next to the Memory Card #2 slot).

Press the wireless button on the "Guitar Hero 3" guitar (Look for the on the bottom of the guitar).

Wait for the four lights to stop flashing, with one light becoming a solid green. Your air guitar should now be connected remotely to the Xbox.

Just got the xbox 360 guitar hero world tour for christmas. We got the drums and guitar working with no problems, but the microphone wont work. Is that supposed to plug directly into the console?

What you need to do is plug the microphone into the xbox 360, then you need to connect a regular 360 controller to the xbox... there are not any buttons on the microphone which is why the controller is needed.

Can't load guitar hero III

This happened with my old 360 and GoW. Microsoft insisted it was the disc, but it wasn't. I ended up purposely giving it the 3 Red Rings so I could send the 360 of for repair. It worked fine when I received the console back from repair.
