This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

See the section for the basket and tub assembly's

The first thing to check is that the drain hose is above the water level in the washer. If the the top of the hose is below the level of the water, it will simply drain out. The pump does not keep the water in the machine. It's basically used to force the water up and out of the drain hose.

Otherwise:

I'd pull the cabinet in order to get to the hoses going to and from the pump first.

See the following:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131

If the hoses are fine, check the shaft from the motor to the pump and check inside the pump to make sure the inlet and outlet aren't blocked.

I'd also check the gaskets at the bottom of the tub.

If you're reasonably mechanically inclined, these are easy fixes.

If you have to get to the gaskets at the bottom of the tub, see the following for how to remove the agitators, pump, motor, transmission, spin tube and basket.

(It sounds a bit complicated but it's not really that difficult.)

You don't have to buy a special spanner wrench to remove the spanner nut. I've used a short 10" pipe wrench hooked over one of the tabs on the spanner nut, tap the handle with a hammer and it should loosen.

Also, don't directly hit the drive block with a hammer. Use a short piece of wood under the drive block and tap up on the wood.

As an aside, see the following Whirlpool Service Manual for top load direct drive washers.

Depending on the problem (hoses or gasket) it's certainly less expensive than calling in a repair person.

My whirlpool won't fill up all the way. It just keeps pouring water and draining.

The drain hose MUST be routed higher than the console, or it will continue to drain. There must be a vacuum break (not tightly sealed will work) at the intersection between the hose and the drain pipe.
There is actually no drain valve that keeps the water in, but rather the physics of routing the drain hose HIGHER than the console of the machine. At minimum higher than the machine's top deck.

Tip

Clothes Washer won't stop filling with water?

If your washer continues to fill with water and does not overflow onto the floor where is that water going???

The water is siphoning from the machine as fast or faster than it it filling. This is caused by one of two situations both have to do with how the drain hose is routed.

The most common is that the drain is too low. The drain for your washer must first rise above the height of the tub or highest water level before it enters the house drain or drainage sink. This height is typically a minimum of 30". So if you are trying to drain the washer into a low pipe, a short sink or down hill you must first raise the hose or piping to that 30" before it heads down hill.

Second cause is where the drain hose is pushed too far into the house drain. A typical drain pipe in the home has a water trap at the bottom. If you put your washer drain hose down into the pipe too far and contact the water in that trap you will also siphon the water from the machine. The drain hose should hook and be secured to the drain pipe and go inside about 6", that's all that is needed.

Amana washer machine will not hold water. The drain hose is fine. What esle could be wrong?

The drain hose could be stuck too far down the drain pipe allowing it to siphon the water out. Also if it seals too tight into the drain pipe it will siphon the water out.

Water continuously runs and cycle won't start. The washer tub doesn't seem to be filling with any water.

Probably a syphon problem . Check your drain hose to make sure hose is not stuffed too far down drain and air can get between the hose and the drain pipe . If you have tapped the hose to the drain to keep water from comming out the drain pipe , go to home depot or an appliance parts house , and get a syphon break . When a washer fills , but water level doesn't rise in the machine , it's being sucked out by syphoning thru your sewer pipe .

Washer keeps filling w/ water, only stops when changed to spin

Your drain line is too low.
OR the drain line is restricting air where it enters the drain stand pipe.
Remove the drain line and hold it up high.
Turn the washer on to fill. It should fill then stop.
This example should explain what you must do to correct the drain line problem.

Whirlpool Washer - Imperial Series Quiet Wash 2

your washers drain hose is too far down the drain pipe which is causing a siphoning action pull the washers drain hose out pipe some you should be able to hear water dropping into the pipe the reason it only happens in the rinse cycle is because the water from wash is being drained and before the water vacuum is broken the rinse water comes in causing it to keep draining

Hotpoint WD440 1400 Spin

There has been an unbalanced load and the machine could not spin
(see ‘Automatic Features’, Starting and Programmes).
Has the drain hose been installed correctly (see Installation)?
Are the drain hose, standpipe or undersink connections blocked?
Has ‘Rinse Hold’ option been selected? If so press the Rinse Hold button

drain hose make sure there are no kinks and the end is over the top of washer to drain this ensures that there is no back flush with drain pipe

clean the dispenser drawer regularly

Clean and dry the dispenser
drawer, syphons, grate and
fabric conditioner exit channel
(A). Also regularly clean the
outlet pipe area

Never force the machine door: this could damage
the safety lock mechanism designed to prevent
any accidental opening

Washer continuously fills but drains at the same time during rinse cycle.

you have the drain pipe too low into tthe house drain pipe, raise the washers drain pipe up , you only need four inches down into the hous drain

also the house drain pipe needs to be as high as the lid of the machine before you put the washer drain tube into the house drain

you have a syphoning effect

Non-stop draining at whatever cycle selection

Is your drain pump constantly running? If it isn't, check the standpipe (drain pipe) and make sure you don't have your drain hose shoved down in the pipe too far or the top sealed off. The stand pipe needs an air gap to properly drain, or it can siphon water from the wash tub. Symptom: Washer continually tries to fill or slow fills, but water won't stay in wash tub. Double check your drain line to be sure. It could be a simple fix.
