Question about Canon BJC-85 InkJet Printer
As the link (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=OSCompatibilitySupportAct&keycode=vistadr&fcategoryid=230&modelid=6620) in Mike's solution states, "Driver included with OS. Download not required.", i.e. Vista comes with a driver for the BJC-85 so you don't need to download one. I've just connected my BJC-85 to my new Vista machine and the printer was detected and drivers loaded automatically.

Canon does not list a driver for Vista. You can see this at Cannon's web link here.
& why here.
There is one other way to get a driver for vista. (Maybe). Microsoft has a program that you install. It scans your PC (make sure your printer is turned on)!
It checks your PC to see if it can run Vista. (even though you have it installed).
It also will show you at the end what driver software you need for vista. Including your printer & will give you a link to download the proper driver.
You have nothing to loose.
Once the vista program has finished & you download any missing drivers, just delete the program from Add/Remove programs in your control panel. Microsoft's Vista checker program link. Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor.

Vista driver for this machine comes stnadard with vista but will not work when old xp drivers are present (or were when upgraded to vista) , remove old driver from system, connect printer, vista should auto reconise and install.
Here is a canon link explaining Vista with BJC 85

SOURCE: will a bjc-85 work with vista?
The immediate response is that there is no Vista driver available for this printer from Canon.
However, that is not the end. Check the Vista printers and see if the driver is already built into Vista or Vista may supply a generic driver for older models of printers.
For a definite answer, you might want to call the Canon Support Center and get the Canon answer on this.

The problem you are having is with the print head and not the printer. Unfortunately, with these canon print heads, they are not dated, so it is possible to install a print head that was bought new and sealed, but is still dried out because it is old.
Try running the print head through one deep cleaning cycle, this sometimes will start to get an old print head flowing.
Deep cleaning cycle can be found by going to PRINTERS , right clicking on the BJC icon, selecting PROPERTIES from the drop down menu, and then selecting the MAINTAINENCE tab.
Check to make sure that the ink tank in the print head isn't dry. Even a new print head can have a dry tank if it's old.
